Incorporate a robust meshing solution and improved dynamics

Something similar to FrostMX that can mesh particles quickly and easily. Blobmesh is slow and highly unreliable (at least when I have tried to use it!) The bifrost implementation into Max was a real step forward, let's reduce the need to move to other apps such as Houdini for particles and dynamics.

OpenVDB is an industry standard for fast manipulation and surfacing of points and volumetric data.

http://www.openvdb.org/

1.If added to Max it could replace the old slow marching cubes surfacing found in Blobmesh.

2. Provide morphological operations such as erode, dilate and smooth before the data is meshed.

3. Provide a means to import OpenVDB data from other software.

Some cool work done with this toolkit

I think it's time to upgrade and don't stay behind other superior softwares.

Yes please! Thanks for adding this here 😉

We need a comprehensive solution, basically Data channel modifier and MCG for fields, not just meshing. Take the data in with a set of creator, reference and loader objects. Manipulate it in a series of data channel and MCG modifiers. Then send it to max compatible renderers. Use the fields as velocity sources for particles, map lookups in the material editor, geometry lookups.

Whatever Hristo says. 🙂

But yes, this without control is nothing. We need MCG controlling and being able to manipulate data from particles (PRT support!) and send it to VDB, then yes, max will be again on FX track. If you need ideas, just look what you can do with magmaflow (and how easy or lets say straight forward it is compared to MCG). Support also Pflow, and ThinkingParticles is a must.

Yes, a generic mesher (better than BlobMesh) that accepts point clouds, particles and regular meshes would be great

This is marked as under review, exciting times ahead hopefully! Big thanks to everyone that has contributed their thoughts and votes to this thread.

I know the original request is about meshing but... since OpenVDB has been mentioned by a Autodesk employee above - we also need a way to generate and manipulate volumes with maps/textures/OSL/forces/dummies etc. Currently we have no framework to do this in Max but it's really high time something like this gets not only looked at but actually brought in as a feature. Importing OpenVDB is fine but it's not enough. Thanks!

A generic tool to convert point data of all kinds into a mesh would be very powerful, especially in combination with a general volume toolset (e.g. OpenVDB). With this, we could create all kinds of great signed-distance/iso-surface-based geometry by merging the points of various elements into one continuous surface. A related keyword to look into here is Poisson Reconstruction, which does a great job at building meshes from points+normals.
