Extending the functions of "Link Revit" command

Extending the functions of "Link Revit" command

Hello everyone,

I have a few ideas, which would be nice if they could be implemented in the future versions of 3ds Max.

A visualizer working in a architecture studio sometimes has to refresh the Revit model 3 times a day, working along with the architects in the design process.

Link Revit function provides a really good base for this workflow, however it would be nice to add a few more features to it.

- Reload From file: Sometimes if a new Revit file is saved (maybe the plan has reached a new stage, and a new file is saved), you don't have the option to change the linked file's path, you can only reload it from the same file. (By detaching, and relinking the file you can lose important settings (materials, layer assignment, etc.).

- Sorting of imported elements: I almost exclusively use Do Not Combine Entities option, because it's much easier to modify the model like this, which happens a lot when you are in the middle of a design stage. But like this, the model has a lot of objects, which are put into the same Layer. It would be nice, if you could predefine some importing options, for example sorting the objects by category into separate layers.

Regards,

Gabor

It would also be helfpul to have a Tick to automatically hide the LinkOriginPointHelper object, because if it's far away from the origin (or the model itself), it messes up the viewport clipping planes, so I hide it manually every time after the import.

I forgot to mention the most important one:

- It would be extremely useful if the objects which are the same type in Revit, could also be instances in 3ds max.

I know this is a bit more complicated, because in Revit, the concept of Instances is different from 3Ds Max instances. I mean, same Type objects can have different Instance parameters, but in Max, Instance means they have the same parameters.

However, a lot of data could be saved if objects which are the same Type in Revit, and have the exact same parameters, could be made 3Ds Max Instances during the import.

Some Linked Revit files can produce a few 100's of MB-s of data, however, if instanced, they could be reduced to a few 10's of MB-s.

Hope this can be solved at some point.

- "Reload materials only" would also be a nice feature.

Linking a rvt file multiple times (using different views) would also be extremely useful. This way we could separate parts of the model, saving some time by updating only relevant parts of the model, or using different import settings for furniture, or walls for example.

Maybe an even better thing would be to have a pre-run and a post-run script available for the Reload, and maybe extending MaxScript a bit to have some functions to reach the objects of the Revit Import. this would solve everything. 🙂
