Copy-paste mesh from a scene to scene

Copy-paste mesh from a scene to scene

It'd be great to have the possibility to copy-paste a mesh from a scene (sceneA.max) to another one (sceneB.max) with a shortcut.

Like CTRL+C & CTRL+V on gizmo in nuke.

example: in SceneA.max, you select a sphere, you hit the copy shortcut, you go in your second max window, you hit the paste shortcut and your sphere and its modifier stack are merged into the 2nd max scene at the same position, like the standard merge tool.

It's possible to do that with this script.

But indeed, it should be possible out of the box 🙂

Since it is made in Rappa Tools and Copytor.

Rappa Tools is buggy for the 2018 version, a bug with the interface. A copier is too lazy to look for and put. And many people do not even know about him.

I've seen a couple of scripts that sort of do this, but it would be nice to have MAX incorporate this functionality natively.

The current approach of saving selected to a file, then merging that into the current scene is tedious, cumbersome and very time consuming.  Even using the scripts, one needs to have multiple instances of MAX running which could be problematic in itself.  Having a simple "Copy/Paste Object" feature built into MAX would be wonderful.  Apps like Cinema 4D already have this option together with multiple open windows/scenes without the need to run multiple instances of the app itself - MAX would do well to learn from other apps especially in the areas of workflow efficiency such as this proposal.

So the idea here is two fold:

(1) Add copy/paste for objects and

(2) Allow multiple scenes to be open in the one MAX instance.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more traction..its certainly something I've been hearing that's a lot of users wish lists. It's on mine for sure!

I use copitor that is excellent for this. His only limitation is that won't do it with different Max versions and would be interesting also a FBX option to communicate with other programs (it works with Max files)

If a script can do this, or almost do it all, then all the more reason that
Autodesk would be the perfect people to implement such a feature natively
inside Max. I'm sure they can do it and would probably provide the added
features you mention.

Hi,

This is a script I created that allows the user to copy and paste objects between multiple opened 3DS Max scenes. Under the hood, it's a quick merge operation that is done without Any prompt. If there is a name conflict, the coming object will be renamed. Also if there is a material's name conflict, the coming object will preserve its own material but the material will be renamed.

Note: Only the first time when you install the script with an opened Max file, you may not be able to use it on a second opened Max file. So I recommend, just for the first time after the installation, that you close all instances of Max. From now on the script will be working on all opened Max scenes.

script is good, thank you.
I do not understand why autodesk does not want to embed this in 3d max.
Why people should look for plugins for such basic things.
Because of this approach, Blender has already outscored 3d max in everything. There everything for people, everything is convenient.

Well, five years later and we have a lot of fancy new things built in 3DS Max, but still no Copy/Paste...

Autodesk: This has to be one of the most basic, yet potentially transformative, productivity additions you could make! I've been using Max for decades now and have thousands of models and scenes, both ones that I've built myself, plus numerous purchased objects and scenes, and yet there is no simple way of accessing objects from one scene to the other. And no: Import or Merge is not simple, nor does it allow one to view the actual objects.

I'm usually good about layers and object naming in my own files, but if it's a stock scene? Forget it. More often than not it's all: Object267, box321, or whatever random thing the modeler chose at the time. All of which makes Merge a futile effort. But if we at least could just open up the file and copy the objects from one to other? At least then there'd be a little more seamless exchange, right?

But now that I think of it, why even open two instances? Why not have Merge open up a "mini-instance" within the program itself? You wouldn't be able to change the file at all, but you could do a basic Orbit view and choose what you need to bring in. That would be ideal! To me (and I think many others) it feels like a very basic functionality that's been missing from the beginning.
