Arc Rotate sensitivity

Arc Rotate sensitivity

I would like to be able to adjust the Alt+MMB sensitivity.

    • Either in the customize user interface/mouse tab
    • Or on the fly in the viewport, with a modify key.
    • Also exposed in keyboard/toolbars/quads/ etc.
    • Maybe as a fast/medium/slow mode

When rotating the perspective view with Alt+MMB it is very sensitive.

In one stroke you could easily turn around the scene 3-4-5 times. This is not necessary.

It is more often necessary to be able be able to fine tune the view.

When using the orbit tool it is possible to use the ALT key to slow down the orbit. This is not possible with the Alt+MMB option.

Good idea. It also needs to be smoother regardless of the speed. At the moment it's so jittery.

I wonder if this is possible to do in any sort of .ini file?

Blender has it.

Ai has the answer.

The research verdict is clear — orbit sensitivity in 3ds Max is hardcoded and not exposed through MaxScript, INI files, or the registry.

MouseConfigManager has zoom speed (ZoomWheelIncrement) but nothing equivalent for orbit rotation speed. Autodesk users have filed feature requests for exactly what you're describing, and it hasn't been added.

The only theoretical workaround would be a low-level Windows mouse hook that intercepts and scales mouse input before Max sees it — but that's a complex, fragile solution well outside MaxScript territory.

So unfortunately: not possible with a clean Max script. Worth noting in the repo for future reference in case Autodesk ever exposes it.
