Given the current development state of Mudbox, merging this product—or at least its core features—into other software would be a great move.

There was an entry on the old Roadmap (when this was available) about unifying brush tools and brush systems and there was a screenshot of a toolbox similar to one of Mudbox. For a moment  I thought its gonna happen but...

My opinion is that this single topic puts 3DS Max far behind Blender. I prefer to work in Max because of Blender oddities and top-notch rendering engines (ie, missing UVW Map modifier).

Still, sculpting features could greatly empower the modelling department for upholstery in Archviz and hundreds of other use cases.

Mudbox is dead, max is far behind Blender, even Mudbox still alive, requires two software to complete, you need to pay for a abandoned Software, which is very painful. Blender can done is all fast and easy. I advise you not to have any expectations to autodesk.

I would not propose merging Maya and Max. However, incorporating the core features from Mudbox into Max could be brilliant.
