Add Surface Unroll / Flat Pattern Tool to 3ds Max

I would like to request a Surface Development / Unroll / Flat Pattern (Farma) workflow in 3ds Max for real-world product design and fabrication.

I use 3ds Max to design metal furniture, decorative products, curved panels, strips, cones, cylindrical parts and other fabricated metal components. After creating the 3D model, I often need to manufacture the individual parts by laser cutting, printing templates, bending and welding.

Currently, I have to move the model to other software to develop the curved surfaces and prepare the patterns for fabrication. It would be extremely useful if this complete workflow could be available directly inside 3ds Max.

1. Surface Development / Unroll

3ds Max should be able to select a curved or developable 3D surface and automatically open/unroll it into an accurate 2D flat pattern, similar to the surface development workflow available in Rhino.

For example, if I create a conical frustum with:

  • Radius 1 = 3 inches

  • Radius 2 = 6 inches

  • Height = 10 inches

  • One base capped

I would like to select the object/surface and use a Develop/Unroll command that automatically opens the actual modeled surface into its correct 2D pattern.

The capped base should be generated separately as a 2D circle.

The important point is that the result must be based on the actual 3D model and must retain the correct real-world dimensions at 1:1 scale.

2. Accurate Dimensions

The developed pattern should retain the actual dimensions of the original 3D surface.

The result should provide accurate dimensions for:

  • Overall length and width

  • Developed surface lengths

  • Arc lengths / circumference where applicable

  • Holes and cut-outs

  • Other important manufacturing dimensions

The 2D pattern should remain at true 1:1 manufacturing scale.

3. Curved Surface / Curve Straightening

It would also be very useful to have a function that can straighten/develop a curved arc, spline or path while preserving its actual length.

For example, if a curved arc has a height of 10 inches, its actual curved length may be greater than 10 inches.

I would like 3ds Max to be able to straighten that curve into a straight line while preserving its original curved length and displaying the resulting actual length.

This would be very useful for determining accurate dimensions for fabrication.

4. Divide the Developed Pattern

After creating a flat pattern, the user should be able to divide it into as many pieces as required for fabrication.

There should be at least two division methods:

Equal Division:
For example, divide a 60-inch developed pattern into 6 equal sections of 10 inches each.

Custom / Unequal Division:
Allow the user to specify different section lengths, for example:

5" + 8" + 12" + 15" + 20" = 60"

The division should also work along curved/developed edges according to their actual developed length.

Each resulting piece should remain individually selectable and editable.

5. Sheet / Page Layout and Nesting

After generating the flat patterns, I would like to be able to prepare them for printing or laser cutting directly inside 3ds Max, without having to move them to CorelDRAW just to arrange them on a sheet.

The user should be able to select a standard or custom sheet/page size, such as:

  • A4

  • A3

  • A2

  • A1

  • A0

  • Custom sheet sizes, for example 32" × 12", 48" × 96", etc.

3ds Max should be able to automatically arrange/nest the developed pieces onto the selected sheet size.

The user should also be able to:

  • Set spacing/gaps between parts

  • Set margins

  • Rotate and manually reposition parts

  • Automatically generate additional sheets/pages when the parts do not fit on one sheet

  • Maintain the exact 1:1 scale while arranging the parts

The actual dimensions of the parts must never be changed simply to make them fit on a page.

6. Manufacturing / Export Formats

The final developed patterns should be exportable directly from 3ds Max in commonly used manufacturing and printing formats, including:

  • DXF

  • DWG

  • SVG

  • PDF

  • Other suitable CAD/vector formats

The exported file should preserve the actual 1:1 dimensions and units so it can be sent directly for laser cutting, CNC, printing or other fabrication processes.

7. Complete Workflow

Ideally, the complete workflow would be:

3D Model
→ Surface Develop / Unroll
→ Accurate 1:1 Flat Pattern (Farma)
→ Dimensions
→ Straighten Curves / Preserve Actual Length
→ Divide into Equal or Custom Pieces
→ Arrange/Nest on Sheet
→ Select A4/A3/A2/A1/A0 or Custom Sheet Size
→ Export PDF/DXF/DWG/SVG
→ Printing / Laser Cutting / Fabrication

I am not requesting only a circumference calculator. I am requesting a complete 3D-to-fabrication workflow that takes the actual 3D geometry created in 3ds Max and produces accurate, dimensioned, manufacturing-ready 2D patterns.

This would make 3ds Max significantly more useful for product designers, furniture designers, metal fabricators, laser-cutting workflows and other manufacturing applications.

I have attached example images showing the types of curved and complex metal designs for which this functionality would be extremely useful.

               If Autodesk could add these features to 3ds Max as soon as possible, I believe many more product designers and manufacturing professionals would give 3ds Max greater consideration for their work.

               Many people move to Rhino because of its fabrication-related capabilities and surface development tools. I have suggested several additional features because I genuinely like 3ds Max and prefer working in it, and I would love to see it become even more powerful for real-world product design and fabrication.

               My intention is not simply to request a few additional tools, but to make 3ds Max a more complete solution for product modeling, surface development, and manufacturing workflows.

                I sincerely hope Autodesk will consider these suggestions and add these capabilities to 3ds Max in the near future. I would be very happy to see 3ds Max become even better and more useful for product designers and fabricators.
