gLTF is quickly gaining momentum, many online and offline engines support this interchange format. Autodesk itself is supporter of the gLTF standard. Let's add native gLTF import and export support to 3dsMax!
Thanks for the interest. We understand that glTF is of interest to many of our customers and we did add a basic glTF exporter a few years ago. Since we did not add import, this idea could not be closed as implemented. At this time, we are not planning on any glTF updates in the near-term as our primary focus is around OpenUSD. There may come a time where this changes, but updates to glTF are not currently on our near-term roadmap for 3ds Max. As such I am switching the status back to Future Consideration to make it clear this isn't something we are currently working on.
For the time being, we suggest that you look into 3rd party solutions for robust import/export of glTF. BabylonJS and Verge3D do support our glTF Material in exports as well as more features than our current exporter. They both also provide import features. BabylonJS is free and Verge3D is a commercial option. There are other options too such as the plugin linked by Eric above.
I can't deny to be slightly disappointed. If glTF was an obscure fileformat with a tiny userbase, lacking an organization that develops standards and if Autodesk would be a boutique development house without the resources to support working on more than one fileformat at a time, this would make sense.
Its weird how Autodesk ditched GLTF to work on USD. USD is a way more complicated a feature. They already have a gltf exporter, all they need is an importer to make a GLTF workflow possible in 3dsmax.
