3DS Max LT
Will there be a 3DS Max LT release similar to what you did with Maya by offering an LT version for indies? I would be very interested in purchasing a 3DS Max LT subscription if so.
I think a Lt. version(for game development) could be achieved by removing some functionality.
-Remove Populate -Remove Any system taxing modifiers -Remove the ability to save out renders(Just there to check lighting and materials for baking) -Only Exportable to .fbx -Poly count limits for scenes at 250k -disable plugins and scripting(I know that's a big hit)
The reason I would remove all this is simple, Autodesk isn't a charity. I believe if they fallowed similar steps in making this version they would dramatically decrease the number of pirated version. And in turn increase the number of authentic users that want to keep up current versions.
I think something like this is well overdue. Especially considering the cost of 3ds max. It's astronomical for the portion of the program that a large number of users access.
Modelling, optional renderers and basic animation. That would service 80% of the ArchViz and Marketing industry pretty much. Even content creation guys for M&E.
No, thanks. Just the ability to unchecked all the features we dont use in Customize>Preferences, so max startup faster, and we don'tt have so many tools in the interface that we don't use. That would be better.
Would be good to have a cut down version of 3ds Max for Ipad or tablet. Using primitives and basic modelling tools and a cut down modifier list with standard shaders. No need to have rendering as could mainly be used for Modelling on the go??
Would this to be for "indies", which would imply highly-featured and still low cost? Or should it be like Maya LT, limited features focused on asset development rather than supporting all stages of a pipeline?
It would also be helpful to provide ideas of what features are desired in an "LT" product. Like Maya LT, in-product rendering would be unlikely (and everyone would have to be OK with that), except for maybe the Autodesk cloud service. What about supporting plug-ins? File readers of various formats? Anything else?
What price, approximately, would people like to see for the features they want? 10%? 50%?

I don't use plug-ins but maybe others will want plug-ins support (comment if you do). And yes I would be okay with doing without the Arnold renderer, I understand the LT version will cost a fraction of the full version so I understand some features will have to be let go.

16% would put us at a monthly cost of $30 per month just like Maya LT.
please no. all it will do is take up Dev and QA time and resources. i just one great version of max. I'd love to know how much time was wasted for standard/design versions.
As Companioncube mentioned creating a new product does come with costs. Is this valuable enough an idea that you would be willing to give up some development resources for Max?
I agree. Definitely not a charity. Autode$k is quite a lot like a tax collector.
I'd like to see scripting stay. Agree about the renderers, perhaps leave scanline. FBX only may be a bit TOO cut back. OBJ, DWG, and the other generic formats wouldn't give any more features but might keep the gears turning with apps that don't support FBX or at least prefer OBJ.
That is a great point, I mainly just use fbx's for Unity but having a few other options could be a plus. And if Autodesk would keep scripting in a lite version that wouldn't hurt my feelings.
