3 Point alignment

3 Point alignment

Its been requested since the early 2000s and yet there still isnt a 3 point align tool in max.

I honestly dont see why. Every other cad package has it and its been in every version of sketchup theres ever been.

Theres a script written in 2004 that does this but it doesnt really work very well.

While im giving ideas, Please just fix the things in your software that are broken and the very very basic features that are missing instead of messing around with new features that are never fully developed and more often than not never touched again. Right now 3DS Max looks like that dirty overflowing toolbox you find in your dads shed rather than an organised chest of high quality tools. Its a joke and its becoming more and more difficult to work with the software.

Right!

That script is age old, extremely useful, and I used it countless times back then. Should be there out of the box (how many times are we going to use that sentence again...)

I've written that same thing in JScript for Softimage a few years back. Technically, it's a very simple thing. It boils down to filling a transformation matrix with vectors from the clicked points, and multiplying the selected object's transformations with that matrix. Nothing fancy.

However, I called it 6-point-align, because I think there should be 3 points to click for the SOURCE and 3 points to click for the TARGET.

And by the way: it would be super handy if, in general, gizmos (like Slice Modifier's) had snap targets at their corners, so that this align procedure could be easily applied.

I think the entire snaps and alignment system needs rewriting quite frankly. It should be more akin to sketchup which is an absolute dream to work with and it understands completely what youre trying to do through way of inferencing. When are Autodesk going to realise that they likely need to stop maintaining an age old code base and let their devs rewrite the parts of the software that are old and inefficient as im sure the devs all want to do but arent being given the time to do so. A ground up rewrite of the core features would be so much more beneficial than releasing a buggy piece of software every year. Nevermind the flagship feature last release being a wood shader. What if you release something that actually works. What if you finally fixed scene states after about a decade...

the 3pt align script is awesome, i use it all the time (Maya also has that functionality although it doesn't work very well). It would be ideal to implement aligning options from AutoCAD as they are extremely good. I remember SketchUp's protractor system was really nice as well although the app itself wasn't very advanced. I can't agree more with the initial post.

I always asked for at least some of the basic constraints from Inventor..

In general, mechanical modelling there - including nice chamfers and bevels - is a lot faster, if you know CAD software.

Yet again im struck with this absolutely ridiculous problem @brentscannell . Seemingly no way in max natively to rotate my pivot to snap to a line to get the rotation of an object that is unknown? This has been a core feature of sketchup since the mid 2000s. You absolutely need to look at getting axis inferencing into max. Its insane to me that this cant be done and people are having to write scripts to try and do such a basic, everyday task.

its ridiculous Maya has this and and Max who supposed to be the more in depth modeling tool doesnt.  What a shame

this is very useful when you  are modeling at odd angles, non aligned with the world coordinates and you use another object as a helper for alignment. In this case the 3 point align help you position this object.

Cmon autodesk !
