Both standard Max and Design share the same core functionality - Design has some tools that help with AutoCAD,Civil 3D, etc.... and would benefit Architects and Designers. Standard Max is generally favored for games, film, etc....

Extensions are post release "updates" that generally introduce new features or fixes (similar to SPs) between new versions of the software.

Hope this helps!

Do you mean the difference between 3dsmax and 3sdsmax design?  The only difference I've seen is that 3dsmax defaults to "by object" in the object properties screen, and 3dsmax design defaults to "by layer".

If this is not what you meant by your question, perhaps you could clarify the question.

Hello @Anonymous,

There are a couple other differences to piggy back on @bob.bernstein's post.  The design version had a light analyzer, defaults to "real world map size", had Mental Ray as the default renderer, interoperability, and a couple other minor things.

In 2017 when you start it up and it asks you which style you'd like, the main difference is the real world map size and default renderer.  All the other differences such as interoperability now exist regardless of the version chosen at first startup.

Best Regards,
