Water material

When ever I try to render with the Ground Water material it says lakerem.jpg external file is missing. Any idea what I might be doing wrong,

Which version of Max?

If it's a full install (from CD/DVD) then that map can be found (several times) in the Samples directory on the distribution media - often on the 2nd disc depending on the version.

The map is being used in the Reflection Map slot of the Ground Water material (and several others). Substitute <installdir>\Maps\Backgrounds\lakedusk.jpg if you have it - it's the same image.

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

It's in the default Material Library (3dsMax.mat).

that would explain why I didn't know of these materials.. I don't have any material librairies installed... (yet I did chose the "material librairy" option in "custom" installation when installing max... if I remember correcly

Are you sure they aren't installed? Check in your <installdir>\materiallibraries folder. If they are there - use the "open" option in the Material Browser to get at them.

Perhaps a "custom install" wasn't a good idea?

Which version of Max?

If it’s a full install (from CD/DVD) then that map can be found (several times) in the Samples directory on the distribution media - often on the 2nd disc depending on the version.

The map is being used in the Reflection Map slot of the Ground Water material (and several others). Substitute <installdir>\Maps\Backgrounds\lakedusk.jpg if you have it - it’s the same image.

If you don't have either of theoe files then substitute any outdoor scene that you have - the results won't, of course, be identical but it will remove that annoying warning.

Then go look on the 2nd DVD in the Samples directory - that's where it is. If you don't have DVDs then you have the trial and that map IIRC was indeed missing. Substitute another image as I suggested.

I'm sure that you've found the files by now. I just installed 2008. For some reason it opens a Materialslibrary file under My Docs, but doesn't put anything in it. All the files were installed under Program Files\Autodesk\3dsMax2008\materials and materialslibrary. Crazy!

Annoying, but true. Look up "Project Path" in the help - that's the culprit.
