Viewport freezing

Hi,

I'm having the same issue, Video above shows it perfectly but for me its happening with physical materials in the scene.

Its freezing and crashing after SP3 update, when I switch to Direct X 9 the problem is gone but also all the cool viewport preview features.

First Machine : Windows 10, nvidia cards GTX1080 + GTX680. Its happening also on my Laptop - Win10 nv GTX1070 and other PC with nv GTX970

Hope you will figure out some solution.

Kind Regards,

Sebastian

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for the information.  I haven't seen this happen much with 970 cards so that is a bit of surprise.  Can you please list the plugins you are using as well for me?  Thanks very much.

Let's try to take a stab at the 970 since it's a card that I haven't seen exhibit these problems before.  (Unless you have plugins that are conflicting).

A new update was released recently, can you try installing that for me to see if it helps?  Last but not least, can we try to regenerate the shader cache on your 970 machine?  (Named "maxFxoCache.dat" located at "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\plugcfg_ln"  Thanks very much for trying those things.

Best Regards,

Hi,

thank you for replying so fast. I've checked the PC and its GTX 770.. Its my older PC and I've even forgot its from age of dinosaurs. Its 770 not 970 but still I'll check it out asap and let you know.

As for 10xx machines, I've installed everything available in the Desktop App before my post, how recent was the update?

Had only some updates on Maya and Fusion 360 recently, none of it for max2017 after SP3.

Best,

Sebastian.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for the update!  The update 1 is found usually in the Desktop App, but you can also find it at Manage.Autodesk.com in your downloads / updates section.  People are still getting used to this, so I made a screenshot for you!  Please let me know how it all goes, I'm here for you.

Hi again,

update didn't help. I'm still getting a freeze in DX11. After it freezes for some time I can work in 3ds max but only viewport isn't refreshing, then it crashes the app.

Gues I will have to wait until next one.

Best,

Sebastian.

Hi and sorry for jumping in here 🙂

I just want to add my problem, which might be related or even the same. Like sn3d described, under DX11 the viewports freeze after some minutes, while the rest of Max remains responsive.

Additionally to sn3d's description, I also get a popup in the lower right screen "the graphics driver has crashed and was restarted" (something like this, translated by me into english).

I tried a lot to fix this, including a registry-hack that's meant to add some delay before such an driver-crash happens. The only difference this hack in the registry made was that the popup changed to "Windows has blocked the following application from accessing the graphics hardware: 3dsMax" (and instead crashing the viewports only, with this registy-mod Max completely freezes).

So far I found no solution and went to DX9 (which itself has really issues, mainly models fully or partially disappearing). Would love if this DX11 issue could be adressed.

Just in case: It's a brand new computer, Windows10pro, GTX1070.

Thank you for the information @Anonymous.   If the suggestions above don't help, then I need to add your info to the tracker log for this issue.  I appreciate you listing your hardware and for the information.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for trying that.  I am going to add this information to the tracking system and I'll update in this thread when I know more.  This issue if not solved by regenerating the shader cache and/or resetting the user settings need to be investigated by development/QA.  Thank you for the updated information.

Hello @Anonymous and thanks for the update.  I've gotten a bit of advice I wanted to suggest for you to see if it helps.  Can you please try disabling the viewcube and turning off selection preview for me?  To disable this option go to Customize > Preferences > Viewports tab > deselect "Selection/Preview Highlights".

I have a couple questions as well, if you don't mind.

How many monitors are you running?  Is Max on the primary monitor?  Do you have multiple graphics cards in your system and if so, are they the same mode?  Thanks for any information, I'm just looking for patterns with users that have this issue.  I'm also interested in your answers to these questions @Anonymous.

It was worth a shot but didn't help also.

My main PC has 1080 (one monitor and occasionally Oculus connected) and 680 (Another monitor and TV connected)

Laptop has 1070 + integrated in Intel i7 graphic chip.

Tried moving max to another monitor at the firs time when it started crashing after SP3 update but no luck with that.

Regarding wool_ 's reply, I can only add that I remember having driver crash once. But after driver update it was fine again. Until SP3 😉

Best,S.

Hi,

yesterday I gave it a new try, and compared to DX9 it was a pleasure to work in DX11, but the crashes are still there, sometimes it works only 2-3 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour till crash.

Selection highlights were all off, view-cube off, shader cache deleted. Updated graphics driver today, but still crashing (freezing viewports) with the popup in the lower right corner about the "display driver stopped responding and was recovered".

After redoing the registry-edit (adding TdrDelay), the popup changed again to "Windows has blocked Max from accessing graphics hardware".

Regarding hardware, it's a 2-monitor system, where I use Max alway/only on primary, second monitor is mostly off.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for the update and the information.  I can see in the crash logs that there are crashes on the OS, but also some from known Max bugs.  I've seen this a few times with other users.  Thanks again for taking the time to update the thread.

Just for info Alfred, when you say that you looked into my crash-reports/log:

I know that Max crashes often when modelling, unwrapping, etc - and often shows the error-report-tool. On there "DX11 graphics driver crashes" here, Max simply freezes until Windows shuts it down, without a chance to error-report, but were you able to see some info about these freeze-crashes as well ?

Hello @Anonymous,

Generally speaking, a freeze like that is often coming from a driver conflict or problem with the OS.  (Not always.)  Sometimes, checking the event viewer logs can tell more about what is happening.  That's where I'd start.  I have seen some weird issues lately with certain peripheral drivers that are causing issues for some people, so listing your peripherals might also help.   For others, certain plugins can cause viewport crashes in high quality mode, etc.

The unwrap and some modeling crashes however are related to known bugs.  The app freezing is often a problem between Max and Windows but I've had little luck nailing this down for many people.  Any extra information is always great.

The crash that just happened generated the attached entry in the event viewer. Somehow it's pointing to Nvidia/Pascal/3D stuff 🙂

Hello @Anonymous,

That's interesting.  I've seen some problems with Titan cards similar to yours and a Google search shows they use the Pascal architecture as well.  I'm going to look more into this, and thanks again for the information.
