Using 3ds Max for a game - Student version

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked a million times over. I'm a great believer in paying for stuff that's used commercially: no problems there. I've dabbled for several years in Gaming, an art that's never really taken off as much as it should have in Ireland (there are lots of talented people here trying to get stuff moving, and they deserve a breakthrough: it hasn't quite happened yet) Anyway with that out of the way I'm basically not too flush, have unity, got several 3ds Max Pro certs up to '15, and want to make a simple game in unity (using Playmaker etc. as I'm not a programmer and it's not what I'm trying to show)

I basically want to see if 1/ I can do it and 2/ If anyone thinks I'm good enough on the strength of 1/ to give me a job. I've spoken to several people whose ideas have ranged from "it's grand" to make stuff and retrospectively license it (I don't think that's possible) or just buy a month's subscription and work hard to get all assets made within that month. I won't be selling the end result, just trying to get a job out of it.

Any guidance much appreciated!

Many thanks,

Tony.

You can't do anything commercial with it, including advertising or free-to-play, etc.  They are fairly lax on using it for portfolio purposes as long as you don't go overboard.  The one month term is a good idea, with good planning and scheduling first of course.  Document that too, prospective employers are looking not just for button mashing skills but time and cost management skills as well.

the student version is for school work only not to be used for anything else

your better off buying the monthly subscription or looking at other software vendors if you can't afford 3ds Max
