Unzipping and Opening Files

I have just recently purchased 3ds Max to work with some 3d objects. I downloaded a zip file from Archive 3d but I cannot for the life of me understand how to open the file to look at the model. Any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated

to open it you would need winrar or win zip, and then extract it to your desktop for example, you can find how to use these on youtube

Evening Mr. Irishman... I have no issues actually unzipping the files... I'm having an issues as to "where" to unzip them and then how to open them. The files are in my Download folder, I just can't figure out where to extract them to.

once you have extract them then you drag that folder to your desktop and open up max click on file open and then you navigate to that extracted folder and max should read the files and then you can open the models

Okay... so far so good. I see bunch of .jpg files, a .3ds file and a .gsm file.
When I ppen3d Max and click on the .3ds file I get a white perspective of the model... no colour tones. Is that what's suppose to open? The model preview from Archive 3d is multi-colour.

As you know jpeg are just image of the renders, and .3ds are max files, which can be opened in max. i could be mistaken but the gsm file. cannot be open in max,  gsm are mostly used in ArchiCAD. The only way I can think of is if you have ArchiCAD installed and then export it to .3DS or .OBJ from there. Max will then open them fine.

if the folder came with texture maps then they should all be textured, i would check the folder and see if there is a texture folder there, or just the material editor by press M on your keyboard this will bring up your material editor

I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong... when I open the model up in 3d Max it is ghost white... no colours or textures. Any ideas??

mmm i am not sure, when you open up a jpeg are they all textured? the only thing i can tell you is contact the site where you got the thing and ask them to get ahold of the molder. As we did not model them you would need to contact the place you download it from. if you brought i would get your money back ASAP

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

You most likely need to relink the texture paths using the Asset Tracker.   Sometimes if Max can't find the right path to the files it'll replace with the object color.  I've used enough models from archive3d to know this happens somewhat frequently.  Some of those models come with the texture but not material as well.  In that case you'd need to make a material and apply it to the model.  Does that make sense?

Best Regards,
