Unable to rotate objects

I am new to 3ds max 2016, and have encountered a problem that does not allow me to rotate objects, I can scale, and position objects; but I am unable to rotate them.  When I hover over an object, a rotational icon is visible, (However) no combination of buttons allows rotational movement of the objects.  The FAQ's and other user questions, have not addressed this problem, and I would really appreciate some solid guidance; without judgement.  Thank you in advance for a solution to this pressing issue.

Sincerely,

Very Appreciative

Select an object, Command Panel > Motion tab, expand the Assign Controller rollout. Expand Transform (if it isn't already). The 3 entries should be Position XYZ, Euler XYZ, Bezier Float. If any of them aren't (specifically the middle one, Rotation) then you managed to override the default controller used for all object Rotations.

Highlight the Rotation line, click the Assign Controller button (just above the list), choose Euler XYZ, click Make Default and agree with the dire warning which appears, click OK. You should now be able to rotate that object and any new ones you create. Existing ones will need modifying in the same way (as just described) but without clicking Make Default each time.

Thank you for the quick response.  However, I think that there must be something going on as well; as I have tried the operations you outlined and still have a problem.  I was wondering if there is a way to reset 3ds max to the default settings, in an effort to undue what I have caused?  Please advise me further to another option, aimed at finding a solution.  I do apologize for the inconvienience concerning the issue at hand; I really do appreciate the help I have and continue to recieve from you.

Resetting your User Settings
However, before you do that, would you load Max, create 1 object (a box will do), save the scene, Zip it and attach it to a reply please?
I'd like to just check whether those controllers are correct or not - this kind of problem, though usually related to moving rather than rotating, is almost always down to the default controller being changed.

Thanks for the file. Your controllers are correct, and on my system I have no problem rotating the Box, or creating another and rotating that. I would go ahead with the Reset (follow the link in my previous post) and see if that helps.
