Unable to open vrmat editor in 3DS Max 2017

Hello,

My team and I have been running into an issue lately with 3DS Max 2017 where we are unable to open the VRayVRmatMtl editor. We are prompted with a message box saying "Failed to initialize python editor". I have included a screenshot in the attachments.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open any scene in 3DS Max 2017

2. Open the Slate material editor

3. With Vray enabled as the default renderer, drag a VRayVRmatMtl into the editor view

4. Double click on it to select it

5. Press the "Open Editor" button in the parameters window to the right

If anyone can provide me with a workaround to allow me to open the vrmat editor, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hello @Anonymous,

As Vray is made by Chaosgroup your best course of action is to ask on the Chaosgroup forums.  This sounds like an installation issue of some kind.  My best suggestion is to make sure Max and Vray are up to date and then post on those forums.

Looking for a solution for this in 3DS max 2018, I stumble on this: "The V-Ray VRmat Material Editor is no longer supported in 3ds Max version 2017 and later." from here: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAY3MAX/VRmat+Editor Now I am thinking about a hack because this funcionality is much needed !

Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I agree, however our team may be better off at looking for a new material standard to use such as Vrscene files.
