Transform Gizmo flip flopping in 2022

since i started using Max 2022 the behavior of the move transform gizmo has become semi erratic and problematic to work with.

When I move a simple geometry object like Box - for instance, in front or right views I have move selected and "view" as reference coordinate system and use pivot point center. Select the box. Transform gizmo appears. Y axis is point up and X is pointing right. So far so good. When I wove the cursor over the Y axis the gizmo instantly flips to showing Z as being up and Y pointing to the left. Fine movements of the cursor cause a rapid flip flopping back and forth between the expected Y up and X right gizmo to the unwanted Z up and Y left gizmo. If I lock the selection and have Y selected int he transform axis toolbar, then it works OK.

Any ideas what's causing this an dhow I might fix it? I have never had this problem before with any of the past versions of Max (I have used them all). It's a having a real tedious and semi frustrating impact on my basic work flow. TIA for any help.

I noticed this flip-flopping as well, although only once or twice. As soon as I switched to World- or Local-coordinate system it went away.

I have a similar issue on 2021.3.  In local space sometimes the handle just goes away completely by becoming too small to click.  Nothing I do will fix it except undoing a few steps and trying again.

I looked for some kind of preference setting to adjust the gizmo sensitivity but did not find anything that helped.

Maybe you have some pull to get this looked into AJ?

Hello @open-range ,

Best bet is to log a bug report, that's what I typically do.  I'm not totally sure what causes the problem here though which is why those bug reports don't always take because QA needs to be able to repro.  What's weird for me is hitting undo and then trying again sometimes works.  The more people who post the better, each post adds more information to the repro steps.

In my case I didn't report this because I'm using an RTX 3070 with gaming drivers rather than the production drivers and as far as I know that's part of the cause.   I've had some weird things in multiple apps but I'd rather have the gaming drivers based on work I'm doing right now.

So we have NVIDIA in common, but not drivers.  That's somewhat helpful.  It narrows things down a bit.

I've noticed my problem happens when I detach a spline from a selected edge, or on geometry resulting from shapemerge.  What are you working on when it happens?

For me, I can start a new, empty scene. Create a box. Try moving the box and the behavior I describe in the above first post of this topic occurs every time.

I did submit a bug report fwiw.

So...it's been, like, two years and this still hasn't been fixed.

What the hell? It really is making MAX nigh unusable.

Im getting this issue too, its not consistant, and i have no idea whats causing it - makes my workflow much harder as gizmo barely works correctly in ortho views. I've looked and compared settings to co-workers but there is no difference or toggle we can see.

AutoDesk just seems to ignore this. It's insanely frustrating.

Autodesk seems to ignore everything.

There are ways in which MAX has been difficult or doesn't work as advertised or just has weapons-grade UI problems for more than a decade, if not more.

I switched from 2013 to 2023 (because I could finally afford the stupid recurring payments model instead of a one-time price) and so very many things that were issues then are still issues now.

Somehow...I don't think tech companies ever actually look at user feedback.

It's like the "Door Close" button or the "Walk" button: it seems like it ought to do something but it's just there to make you feel better while you wait. That's customer feedback for every tech company.

For the transform gizmo flip flop problem I "lock" every selection, show the axis constraint buttons in the top tool bar and pick whatever axis constraint button is needed.

I have the space bar set to "lock selection". I have managed (with hot key editor) to get rid of the annoying pop up that required a second step/mouse click each time to lock a selection. That "feature" was added a few versions back.

I have been in the upgrade path for a long time. In general the new releases seem to work much better now than in previous years (esp Max 2017  the all time worst). I do wish the transform gizmo behaved like it used to and these gyrations were not required.

So...they "fixed" something that wasn't broken? Eugh.

What were they thinking? What was this supposed to help accomplish that it was worth basically getting in everybody's way in the process?

I can confirm that even max 2024 has that same issue. I've been experiencing it for the past few versions. Sad.

Yes Max 2024 continues to have the same, very annoying and time consuming, problem with this basic functionality.

And I have to wonder...I mean...was there some well-meaning but ultimately misguided engineer who thought it was a good idea...

...or did someone make a boo-boo and it never got fixed?

I more wonder why it can't get fixed/ made to work correctly like it used to.

Is anyone from AutoDesk 3ds Max support reading this? If yes, please reply. Thank you.
