Split a mesh into several meshes?

Hi.

I'm new to 3ds max and I'm wondering if there's a better way to create several meshes from my model than to duplicate it and deleting parts of it, rinse and repeat. If there was a way to make all the triangles into a mesh each that'd be great, but even selecting a couple of triangles and making a new mesh of them would be of great help.

Thanks for reading.

trying to understand... but... having difficulty. Can you clarify with images what you're trying to see simplified in modeling?

You using "mesh" or "poly" modeling?

There are LOTS of ways to detach polys from an object (manually, boolean, script, etc..) or splitting meshes (for example: using a slice modifier and checking the "split mesh" checkbox). .. But as previous poster said... It would be easier to understand what you are trying to achieve if you added a screenshot or two.

Also, if you're new to 3ds max you will learn soon enough that for almost every tedious, repetitive task, there is a max-script for it 😉 It's usually worth checking http://www.scriptspot.com/ and see if theres something there that accomodates your needs.

Thanks for the fast replies guys :). I want to divide the ship into submeshes so I can easily see through the exterior of a particular floor by just disabling that submesh. I did check out scriptspot but I didn't find what I was looking for, mainly due to me not knowing what to search for.

select the mesh and put a "slice" modifier on top of that mesh, play with slice settings for wanted results?

edit: ok no i'm being an ****, that's not what ur looking for, you wanna be able to select and hide meshes. If you want to avoid making multiple meshes you can also select a number of polygons in the mesh and do a "delete mesh" - modifier, this way you can turn it off or on. If not simply select the polygons, and do a "detach" in the mesh-control panel on the right. This will create a second seperate mesh from the first one. And so on
