Smooth like Modo?

Hello,

I'm not sure if anyone is familar with MODO, but I know somehow that when you import a mesh into that program, the curved surfaces of your mesh are automatically smoothed (though I'm not sure how). I was wondering if 3DS Max is able to do the same, or is the only way to smooth by using autosmooth or appling subdivision to your mesh after you import?

Hi. I don't know MODO, but Max uses two different approaches when it comes to smoothing meshes: 1) Altering geometry (like Turbosmooth, Meshsmooth etc.) or 2) Pure visual smoothing without subdivision or other geometry altering.

Most times you use both or only number 2 (visual smoothing). The method to choose depends of the desired result.

Visual smoothing can be done via modifiers (like the Smooth Modifier) or can be applied on sub object level (smoothing groups). Check out the help files for more detailes (press F1).

Hope it helps
