Select and link wont work

Hey everyone

So whenever I use the select and link tool on both Max 2017 and 2020, it doesn't work. The issue I am having is I will link the child to the parent, they will both have select brackets on them for a fraction of a second, then they will automatically unlink from each other. They don't even show up at any point as linked in the scene explorer. I have dug around online and I haven't seen this happen so I might be doing something wrong? I have a few years of experience with 3DS max so its not like I have never used the tool, quite the opposite. What is really crazy is how it doesn't work in BOTH 2017 and 2020 out of no where, mid working on an IK rigging.

Thanks ahead of time.

There may be other issues with the objects to limit linking e.g., wire parameters, constraints, controllers.

Start a new drawing and create a box and a cylinder.  Are you able to link the box to the cylinder?  If so, I would examine the problem objects to to see what may be affecting them.

No, I have tried that and sadly no dice. It didn't work. I have reset my computer as well. Like done all the basic troubleshooting stuff. I tried all the different basic meshes and nothing would link together.

I also just tried doing it from the scene explorer, picking a new parent from the right click menu and that also didn't work.

That is really weird! It is difficult to debug without being able to duplicate the problem.

You might try, in a blank drawing, opening the MaxScript Listener and the Macro Recorder then create a box then a cylinder.  Now link the cylinder to the box.  The results should look like this with no error messages:

Okay I did what you said and it looks different for sure. I did it three separate times and the results are the same each time. Very strange.

Can you post a sample file and note the  child object and the parent object that you are tryig to link it to?
