Screen Looks Weird in 3DS Max 2019.1

Anonymous
Not applicable

I've recently upgrade my monitor res to UHD on my left monitor and FHD on my right monitor

Since doing that I have been able to used 3ds Max 2019.1 successfully once.

But now this screen is all skewiff and Its very difficult to use.
I have a screen shot  with it on my 1920x1200 screen, but the big black areas are there on both screens if I move the max window. How do I fix this?
Max 2016 does not have this problem

Hello @Anonymous

Thanks for posting to the forums! Does this happen on both monitors? Can you try doing the following.

  1. In Windows (any version) go to Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display.
  2. In "Customize your Display" change the font size of 'text, apps and other items' to 150%

I'm not sure if this will work cross monitors though, so please keep me updated if this doesn't fix the issue and we can continue troubleshooting 😄

Sorry I have been awol
Actually letting windows decide on font dimensions has been the trouble.
SO if I set different font scaling sizes everything is either ok on the 4K mon and 4xtoo Big on the 2K mon or too big on both, or too little on both. I was getting this weird black problem until I turned off "fix apps that look blurry"
even that was intermittent and I was using 2016 for a while.

The only fix was set custom scaling at 100% and stop windows from scaling anything.
My 4K monitor is 24 inches so everything is sharp, but tiny. I've just gotten used to it.

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for the additional information! I was looking into the issue further and stumbled upon this thread here; a few folks had luck with creating a new windows user profile, which took care of the display issue (you would have to reinstall your programs).

Another thing that worked for people was to scale their monitor to 149%...maybe this information can help in your situation.

Either way it sounds like your current solution of setting a fixed scale of 100% and locking scaling is working for you if this alternatives don't end up working out.

Making a new user profile and re-installing everything did not sound like  a fun thing to do.

So increased the scaling to 125%.
It does mean that all my dotnet labels and buttons look completely out of scale and don't fit the window.

I will have to do a fix in my script for this.

I did see this link and was wondering if it might provide a solution?

I agree, creating a whole new user profile doesn't sound like a great option, though scaling between 100-150% gave you some results! This may be more of a windows issue, and the article you linked looks like it has some promising options! Please keep me updated if any of those options work out for you!

This information may help...

  • Right clicking your Max 2019 launcher
  • Click the properties
  • Click the compatibility tab
  • Check "override high DPI scaling behavior"

Here is an image of what that should look like.

I hope this helps!

Actually my solution was a different one.
I suspected that the problem was that I had a 4k monitor and a 2k monitor.
So I bought another similar 4k monitor from dell.
Now I have 2. They are both 24 inch. But with reading glasses - no eyestrain that I can discover. I've left the scaling at custom 125% because dot.net button become unreadable  from maxscript.

I have to work out a way of reading screen scaling and scaling down the font sizes so they fit in the boxes.
Does anyone know how to do that?

Hi @Anonymous

A screenshot would help me understand the display issue you are trying to fix currently. My understanding of the new issue is that you have have your screen scaled at 125% and the text in 3DS Max is displaying outside of the UI boxes? Here is a screenshot of my windows display settings currently.

Did you edit any of your display settings inside 3DS Max before you got the 4K monitor setup? It may be worth reverting your Max user preference settings back to default, but keep in mind that would mean you have to relink any plugins you may be using.

I hope this helps!

I have the exact same problem, also one 4K monitor and one FullHD.

I don't think the solution should be "buy a second 4k monitor"

Hello @Anonymous

Great to hear from you! I'm curious, have you tried the other suggestions in the above thread? There are a few screen resolution issues with how Windows interacts with 3DS Max, and it's really a case by case basis. Do you mind listing your hardware specs for you monitors, and what your current resolution settings are?

You are right, this solution isn't a universal answer, it just so happens that that's how @Anonymous chose to solve this issue. I will unmark the previous solution.

I look forward to chatting further on this issue with you 😄

i had the exact issue on my dell 4k 32 inch, thanks for the method mentioned above it's solved.

Right click on the 3dsmax 2019 shortcut, go to compatibility tab and set the overide to system enhanced then boom, max back to normal
