Saving the file first time after importing a .3ds file

I just exported a big sketch up file to .3ds and then imported it into 3ds max 2016 educational version. Everything was fine until I tried saving it for the first time. It is taking so long and finally it goes to not responding and then I have to just force close the app and restart it with the hope of saving it this time. I can't get started with my work with this saving speed.

Suggest me something if I am doing something wrong or is it the software and the computer because I am sure it's not the machine as we have Z220 in out computer rooms.

what are the specs to your computer how much ram do you have? how big is your file you tried to import into max from sketchup? if you have a limted about of ram then maybe this is causing the problem? have you updated max to the lastest service pack and hotfix?

do you get an error message when you are force to close down max?
