this is related to many functions !
1 - you are not showing your bitmap in scenes , this is done by going to each bitmap you want , and check the : show map
2 - you are not showing objects in their material color , this is done by going to display tab , and check the : show objects by material color , not by object color
3 - or simply you are not using the realistic or shade viewport setting , this is done by click on the viewport , select realistic or shade (or just hit the F4)
