ok problem is i have a file with some missing maps, i located the material which is missing the map and instead of using that missing map i link it to another map which i want to use instead, problem is max stil keeps asking for that missing map and its not applied to anything at all, how to get around this? i already found the material with the map in question and changed it to another map so idk why its doing this, any help would be appreciated. i do not wish to go in and make some map with the same name either to relink, just to make sure i say that

Files are linked to Materials and the Materials can exist in either the 'Material Editor' and/or 'Assigned to an Object'.

You have said you have removed the material from the Object but have you deleted the material from the Material Editor?

If you have deleted the material from both the 'Material Editor' and 'Object' then it should no longer be referenced anywhere in the scene.

See attachment on how to delete Materials.

Create a path from the max files to the materials if you don't know how to do this then here you go link https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/3DSMa...

Cannot you just delete the material from the material editor or slate? when deleteing the map max should say when delete "do you want to delete map from scene and material editor or do you want to just delete it from the material editor if you just delete it from the material editor then it will still show up

you should also be able to delete the so-called map from the scene library

check in Asset Tracking (Shift+T), if there's still references to the missing maps...well then there's your problem...

what about using the Resource Collector located under the Utilities tab in the command panel (click "More..." and its in that list). This little utility gathers up all your maps and saves it to the output path you specify. There are a few other useful options in there too; its pretty self-explanatory. 3dsmax uses absolute pathing, so whenever an asset isn't located where the .max file thought it was (precisely), you'll have to re-path it. A pop-up will alert you to this when you open a .max file with a missing file reference.

The bottom line is the file is still linked in the scene and as previously mentioned it is either

a.) assigned to an object

b.) buried somewhere in the material editor

c.) or both

It could be buried deep down in a Multimaterial somewhere and even though that multimaterial may not be assigned to an object or that particular material id is not linked with an objects id it's still there. All I can suggest is to keep looking or try a maxscript - there are plenty available to do such tasks:

its not connected to any multimaterial not is it burried, i found all three that are the problem, thing is as long as i dont like it to the correct map it wont disappear, in asset tracking as well as any bitmap tracker, i had this issue for years and just make a fake map and give it the name it was looking for but was thinking there was  a better way but it cannot be just deleted either, its strange

is this your own model or someone else if you bought it then they must of sent map to your email in an attachment? if you did not get the specific when you bought it maybe contact the site/seller where you bought it from?

If this is your own model then you would know how you modeled the model and how you assigned the materials unless you delete and empty the recycle bin by mistake and if that is the case then i doubt you can do anything about that

its my model but the map does not exist anymore, all that got deleted but its stil seeking for the map, i think best i recreate it since there doesnt seem to be a immediate solution

so did you see it says File Missing in Asset Tracking ? And did you RClick>Remove Missing Assets ?

that does not work

you're not helping others helping you, you know that ?

So all you could reply was "that does not work" without giving any info on the state of the Asset Tracking, whether after you Removed it, the entry

reappears or what..no one knows...

Anyway, this is the last thing from me to try, select the offending object, in the Listener (F11), in the pink panel type in

$.material=undefined

Shift+Enter. In the lower panel, blue "undefined" should appear.

Your object should now have no material assigned to it. Save, reopen. (assuming you've already cleared out things from the Mat Editor)

that's the problem you guys are not getting it, your offering simple solutions that i already tried, i am an experienced max user, and ofcoarse the missing maps show up in asset tracking, its not applied to any object and that is the weired part, the scene also is not a simple one and really large, thanks for your help though, i already went and just created maps in the paths it wanted which solved the issue, sometimes its just a pain because these are issues i see with many files, many people just ignore them

ok, one more thing...

If there is a UVW Unwrap on your object, I bet it's referenced in there (to display the texture as you're doing your UVs, of course)

If there is...collapse it...

that am not sure of, that is very possible because i do that for some objects

if you CAN'T collapse it for some reasons...I'm sure you can try out the Remove/Reset textures in there and see if one will work...
