Most likely that red cross in Scene Explorer means that the UI has become corrupted and you need to reset it as explained here:
and here:
Save your Custom UI (Customize>Save Custom UI Scheme ) before resetting to make it easier to restore any custom toolbars or menus you have created after the reset.
