Re opened file and it's all messed up

Hi there folks!

I've been working on this file all day yesterday and when I reopened it this morning...it's all messed up! I mean, not reapairable in any mean.

This actually happened to me in another project I worked on a few months ago.

I've copied a picture. This is supposed to be a sofa, but now looks more like a sofa after a zombie attack!SOFA SCRAP.PNG

Why is this happening and how can I avoid losing precious time like that?

tks!

The times I had similar problems have been when saving long and complex modifier stacks. When loading then can look like that... It seems these long stacks make it more vulnerable to bugs.
