Problems with merging geometry in scenes 3DS Max 2018.4

Hi,

Having a real issue with 3DS Max 2018.4 at the moment, in some scenes merging any items is taking a really long time, as in minutes to merge even a simple box. Also if I merge anything from that scene into another it then effects that new scene and then I have the same problem.

Finding it extremely frustrating as I need these scenes that seem to be infected, anyone having the same issue as I'm stuck with what to do?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums.

Have the files you're trying to merge bloated in file size? I would check to see if there are multiple materials in the scenes, transferring between them. If you open up your slate material editor, you can load all scene materials by navigating to Material>Get all Scene Materials

If that doesn't turn up anything, would you be able to zip up, and attach the file that is having this issue, and attach it to your next forum post, I would love to take a look! if that's not an option, we can figure out some other way to trouble shoot this issue.

Looking forward to helping resolve this 😄

I forgot to clarify, you are talking about a File>Import>Merge, and not a Shapemerge on an edit poly right?

This also could be a trackview node or motionclip path bloat issue, I can send you some cleaning scripts to resolve this issue tomorrow. Hopefully that will take care of the issue. Here is an older thread that describes those issues in more detail.

Okay, I hope that helps, talk to you soon.

Hi @hagen.deloss,

Thank you so much for responding, I'm attaching one of the files I'm having issues with, whenever I merge into or from this scene it takes a very long time. If I have a scene that is working fine and I merge something from this corrupt scene into that one, it seems to then corrupt that scene (hope that makes sense)! Also you are correct with the file size they are extremely bloated, so you maybe right with the material issue, how would you fix that?

Again thank you so much for you're help, it's driving me crazy!

That's one big scene! I loaded it up at 323mb, and ran a few cleaner scripts on it. It's back down to 17mb. I have attached the cleaned scene and will send you the scripts in a private message.

All you need to do is

  • Load up the bloated scene
  • Drag and drop the script files into the scenes
  • Resave

I hope this helps 😄
