Opening UV Editor Crashes Max 2021

Only reference I can find from a similar issues on the forums is a 9-year-old post. Applying an Unwrap UVW modifier to any object in 2021 and trying to open the UV Editor from the subsequent menu results in a "Sorry an error has occurred and the program will now close" message. It happens with existing and new scenes. This behavior is not present on a 2019 install of Max.

I have VRay, Substance, Floor Generator, and Itoo's set of free plugins installed, but otherwise this is a fresh install of Max on a Windows 10 rig. Any ideas on possible solutions? I was doing a test run with 2021 to justify updating our studio to the latest version but UV's are a pretty critical part of the workflow.

I'm facing the same problem,

the application immediately crashes whenever I open the "Unwrap UVW" modifier.

I'm using 3ds Max 2021.1  update. and I've already reported the problem.

I use also vray, Itoo FP, substance, Win 10

Hey everyone, we have been trying to track this down on our end but haven't had much success thus far. As such if you have any sample scenes for us to try, please upload them as this will help us a lot with tracking down this issue. Thanks.

Guys - the solution was covered a bit earlier in this thread.  You need to change the Custom Defaults UI back from Max.Vray to the Max Default.  I found that scenes that were saved at some point with max.Vray would still crash even though the Default was reinstated.  Any new scenes however would run the UVUnwrap OK.

Hi,

from my feeling I don't think it is so difficult to track it down 🙂

1. Customize -> Customs Default Switcher -> Max.vray

2. Restart 3ds Max

3. Create a teapot and add a UVW Modifier

4. Press "Open UV Editor"

5. See Max crash

6. Recreate steps 3-5 with any other possible geometry that you can imagine

Thanks Jonas. In this case since we are dealing with so many 3rd party tools, scenes will still help the best as they will capture the condition of the scene as they were saved, allowing us to really see what is going on faster/better. So if you're able to quickly post up some .max files it will help us triage it based on what is going on local for your system.

Hi,

sure if it helps you. I'm not running any 3rd party plugins apart from V-Ray 5. So I don't think it has anything to do with anything except the combination of V-Ray and 3ds Max 2021.

Greets,

Jonas

only have vray5 installed.  But the problem comes even if I start a new scene, make a cube, convert it to editable polygon and then try to use the unwrap.

I can also verify that if I switch back my max defaults (in my case max.legacy), close 3ds Max and reopen it and then open the scene I just posted before it will also crash. But if I create a fresh scene and redo a new teapot then it doesn't.

I think it has to do with the materials that are populated in the material editor if you start a scene from scratch. So if I start a scene with max.vray defaults then it would be populated with V-Ray materials, while if I start with max.legacy it would be populated with Standard materials. These materials would also be saved in the scene that's why even switching back to the max.legacy defaults will crash the scene because the materials in the editor are the ones from the max.vray.

I hope that might help you to track this 🙂

Gary,

Do you still have a copy of your "bad" ENU folder settings? If so, I would very much like to get zipped versions of both the "bad" and "good" ENU folders so I can forward them to our developers.

Please let me know, and I'll send you a private OneDrive link where you can upload them. Thanks!

Hi Habitat,

Please see your private messages. We've logged this as a 3ds Max defect, and our developers and the V-Ray folks are looking into this.

I am curious about something: if resetting your user preferences back to default fixes this issue (temporarily), could you please let us know? If so, I'd like to get zipped copies of both your "bad" ENU folder and your new one so our developers could compare them. Thanks!

Hi folks,

I'm checking with the 3ds Max dev team to see what our discussions have been with Chaos Group and iToo Tools on this, and what the status is of fixing these UV Unwrap issues. I'll report back as soon as I have some updates for you. Thanks!

Hello, I am experiencing the same crashes as everyone else EXCEPT I do not have VRay installed.  As mentioned earlier, I renamed my ENU folder to ENU_old.  Max generated a new one and Max no longer crashes after applying UnwrapUVW.  This issue is not limited to VRay users.
