Object Paint

Hi guys,

I've had this problem for years, can anyone suggest what's wrong with object paint ? Why doesn't it just work?

So we have a common problem, you import geometry from microstation / revit / rhino etc and need to put people / furniture on balconies, you think let's use object paint. Ok, so you have to use the clunky interface (that's bearable), you select your objects and start painting..... only for the objects to not paint correctly.

It looks like 3dsmax ignores elements and chooses the bottom element to paint on.

Images attached.

Red floor is 1 object, blue object is detached from the red one to highlight the problem. One can paint on the blue one fine. I appreciate you can explode to elements etc and reattach but these are grouped buildings instanced about 50 times, I don't want to make the file larger and clunkier.

Object Paint A painted.jpg - person painted on red floor above blue floor, view subsequently tilted to wonder why it's not painted on the object, Object Paint B & C shows the figure to be painted far away and on the bottom element.

This happens in 3dsmax 2019, 2020 & 2021 as well.

Normals are not flipped etc, object is collapsed to remove modifiers.

3dsmax 2020.3

Help much appreciated as always 🙂

Jason

Hello @JasonLuckett ,

Did you try painting in a perspective view instead of an ortho view?  Or vice versa?  Seems like a hit-target problem.  Worth a shot.

Yes tried that, thanks.

I'd thought you'd retired from here, welcome back 🙂

Kind regards,

Thanks @JasonLuckett !   Still around and doing what I can.  Been pretty busy with 'real life' lately and it's been a ride for sure.

I can't seem to repro this problem on my end.  I'm using primitives and diffuse paint.  Are the files linked in or just imported geo?

Thanks for your prompt reply @Diffus3d , you're a credit to the forum, always genuine and always helpful 🙂

I think the problem with object paint probably resides with imported geometry, I mean I've collapsed the geometry, checked overlapping surfaces, checked normals, etc, but with no luck. This piece of geometry came in from Rhino, I'm guessing that's the problem, just a shame a workhorse like Max can't resolve this. It's nothing special, just floor plates.

When I get some downtime again I'll try to find out the problem.

Many thanks,

Jason

Just a thought here, but since you didn't mention the location of the imported Object's pivot, maybe the pivot is at the bottom element and for some reason is confusing the object paint with your imported geometry?    To test this move the pivot to another element and see if that changes the placement via Object Paint.   If so, you could detach the floor elements and center the pivots on each floor and try Object Paint on the scene then.   Maybe I am misunderstanding your situation, but thought his might be worth a try.

I like cases like this because they are so outside the normal box.   If you have time, maybe you can post just a small bit of a file with the problem to test on.  Cool stuff, and great to see you again Jason!

Best,

AJ

@10DSpace  thanks for the help, it was because the object was in a group, even with the object opened in the group, very peculiar behaviour and I'm sure it's happened on non-grouped items before but maybe I'm remembering wrongly.

I guess groups have some issues, guess the work around is detach the object from the group and reattach it.

Thanks,

@Diffus3d  thanks for your help, solution was the object was sitting in a group, still pretty strange behaviour but there you go 3dsmax has never been logical !

Detach the object from the group and voila all is fine, bit of a pain but what can you do!

Thanks again and have a good weekend,

Jason

How about that!?  To be honest I didn't even think of trying to group it first.  I wonder if it still works ok if the group is simply opened instead of ungrouped.  Thanks for sharing your solution bud!
