.obj mesh from scan texture problems

I have an OBJ that when opened in other software appears textured very nicely but when opened in MAX it looks awful.

Any ideas?

See screenshots.

Any help from you geniuses would be amazing.

Hi @Anonymous,

which version of Max did you use? Which other software have you tried?

Would it be possible to have the file, so that I can test it locally?

Of course, there's a dropbox link here for anyone to have a look at:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gcnr9kixv32d2dr/MESH%20DETAILS.obj?dl=0

I used Autodesk Meshmixer to view the file which showed a great result.

3ds Max is where im seeing the same mesh with horrible results.

I'm using version 2018.

Thank you

Hi @Anonymous,

did you try to open the file with Meshmixer, export it still as an .obj file and then import it in 3ds Max?

Please let me know if you see any difference.

Regards,

Thanks for the suggestion! I was fairly hopeful for this solution but unfortunately when importing the new mesh from meshmixer into 3ds max it pops up with an error saying 'Invalid Texture Index'

Any ideas?

Thank you very much.

@Anonymous,

I found an interesting article about the error message you get: Error: "Invalid Texture Index" when importing certain .obj files into 3ds Max 2018.

Please let me know if it helps.

Sorry Francessco,

I have been away.

I tried to solution of using 3ds max 2017 instead and i can see that the texture has been imported this time which is GREAT, however, the texture does not look like it did in other software and is speckled by lots of black polygons.

The mesh also appears rough where in other software it is smooth.

Any help would be incredible.

I have attached a screenshot.

Thanks you,

Danny

Hi @Anonymous,

I did a couple of tests with MeshMixer, exporting your mesh using other formats.

COLLADA (.dae) gives interesting results when imported in 3ds Max, but I'm not sure that it's good enough for you.

So I suggest to try it, but also to try other formats (STL ASCII, STL Binary, etc.): some of them take a long time to be imported in 3ds Max, but the result might be better than OBJ format.

Please let me know if it you get any good result.

Hi @Anonymous

I had a quick look at the scene. Here is what i noticed:

Faces/polygons were flipped. (1)

The vertices were not joined (2&3)

Flipping the faces and welding all the vertices with a threshold of 0.001 produced the results in (4).

Hope this helps?
