New Layer Manager questions

Hello all!

Among the great number of issues with the new layer manager (since 2015), there are a couple which are infuriating, so I wanted to see if anyone had a solution! Any help is greatly appreciated!

1- Whenever you create a new layer with objects selected, it puts those objects onto the new layer (what I want) but then it renames all the objects to the same name as the layer with a number at the end. This is infuriating as I now have no idea what object is what in the layer. Is there a way to stop this so it preserves object names?

2- Now the layer manager is a "scene explorer"- whenever I click "layer manager" in my quads, it opens a vanilla scene explorer which has a load of columns about revit and i have to reconfigure it to show "renderable", "frozen", "hide" etc (the stuff that was in all the previous layer manager windows). What's infuriating is I have to do this every single time i create a new max scene.

I've saved the scene explorer layout i like, but it doesn't load it by default when I click "layer manager"- it just loads a vanilla scene explorer with those useless revit-related columns. I have to go to scene explorer manager- load- load up my preset- every time. Is there a way to make it load my saved scene explorer preset when I click layer manager? Is there a way to make it keep my preferred columns (the same ones 3ds max has had for over a decade)?

3- When I right click on new scene explorer windows, I understand what's supposed to appear is a quad menu with all the options from the original layer manager on. That doesn't happen for me, i get a white single column right click menu which doesn't have any of the original functionality in it. Is there anything, short of reinstalling max and not loading up my interface settings, to fix this?

Is there any chance the old, working layer manager is going to be returned or will we have to contend with scene explorers from now on?

Hello,

In looking over your questions below, I was wondering if you could clarify some things for me.

1. "Whenever you create a new layer with objects selected, it puts those objects onto the new layer (what I want) but then it renames all the objects to the same name as the layer with a number at the end." I'm not seeing this behavior in 3ds max 2016. I created half-a-dozen Primitives (Box01, Sphere01, Tube01, etc.), selected some of them, then in the Layer Explorer created a new layer. Each selected object got placed on the new Layer01 and retained their previous names.

2. "...whenever I click "layer manager" in my quads, it opens a vanilla scene explorer which has a load of columns about Revit..." Did you add Layer Manager to your quad menu? It's not in there by default. Also, are you working in a generic 3ds max scene or are you working in 3ds max with geometry linked from a Revit .RVT or .FBX file?

3. "I've saved the scene explorer layout i like, but it doesn't load it by default when I click "layer manager"- it just loads a vanilla scene explorer with those useless revit-related columns." Did you use Customize > Configure Columns > Application Origin to see these Revit columns? Again, in a clean 3ds max scene, I'm not seeing this behavior.

If you are still seeing this behavior in a fresh 3ds max scene file, you might want to Reset your 3ds max User Default settings.

Please let me know if the above information helps, and I'll be happy to continue assisting you.

Best regards,
