Need help with Image I/O Error, Error creating Direct 3D Device:3DS Max 2016

Hello so today I have a question so for some reason today when I tried to apply a dds texture map onto one of my models/materials this error occurred and this error also has happened to me in the past however I had to do a clean install of my computer to fix it prior and I really do not want to do so again, so if there is any help I can get in this matter that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Perhaps this tip from another forum might help?

Thanks for offering a solution however I believe this no longer works for newer versions of 3ds max as there are no longer both dds.bmi and dxdds.bmi files and attempting to move the one file now just causes the 3ds max program to freeze as I have tested this solution prior before my first clean install I talked about in my post however I'm starting to think I should attempt to work around the problem by converting my texture files to png or targa depending on which works best as it appears to be that this error is one tricky one to solve unless you just wipe everything off the computer but I'm still open to any additional solutions.

What's the temperature inside your case?
Can you monitor the motherboard temp.

I've experienced a few temperature related graphics issues before. Even a dirty gpu card contact. Or horrible drivers.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

Does it do this with all DDS textures or just specific ones?  (Maybe bad or unsupported header compression?)  Also, can you please tell me your current display driver in 3ds Max?  Does it help if you try a different one?

Best Regards,

Thanks for the added response dara and yes I can monitor my comps temp along with the motherboard through my system bios so I will check on that once I get home and as for a dirty gpu card I'm not sure if that would be a cause for the problem as it seems a clean install would most likely fix the problem again however I do not want to resort to a clean install every one to two months and as for drivers I was thinking that However I have already tried uninstalling my graphics drivers and then reinstalling them but with no effect I even tried installing different versions of the driver but with no effect but like you say it could perhaps be a overheating issue but it just seems more on the technical side as this issue always happens under these two conditions which are me shutting down my computer then turning it back on later then the error occurring which was what happened this time or the computer crashing abruptly then after restarting it the error starts occurring which is what happened prior so I'm thinking either a file may be missing for some graphical component of my computer or just something else. But I'm going to examine my comps temperature once I return home and give you a update but any additional solutions from you or anyone else here on the forums would be of great help

Oh I just noticed your respond Alfred and thanks for the welcome but yes this error occurs with all dds texture files and I have tested all the display driver settings as well with no change either.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for the update there.  This is a new one for me so we may have to back and forth a bit on this.  Would it be possible to attach one of the dds's?  (even a spec or something that is basically unimportant?)  Or, you could PM me a link to the file or I could create a private folder for you.

Also, can you please run a DXDIAG for me?  I wonder if it shows any errors.  You don't need to attach it, just look to see if it showed any errors when you ran it.

Are you on W10?  Lastly, do you have an onboard video card as well as a PCIe card?    Thanks for the info!

Best Regards,

Alright so first thing first so I have found a pretty decent work around for the dds textures the only thing I have to do is convert them to png via a very helpful website I found however the process is a little bit tedious but it works none the less just in case this error can not be solved but now then. In Response to dara, it seems that my comps overall temperature is normal along with the motherboard so thanks for the suggestion just in case there were problems in regards to that. In response Alfred, so I ran I dxdiag and everything seems normal according to it so I assume there are no problems with directx or my drivers and yes I'm on windows 10 and I only have an onboard video card. And as for attaching one of my DDS Files it seems like the forums don't like that extension? But it does seems the DDS textures work though since it can be converted to png.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for the update.  If you zip up a file the forum will allow the attachment, you are correct there are some formats the forum won't let attach.  In those cases the .zip format works.  I do recognize that the dds's likely work in general, it's just that they may be using a newer header compression or format that Max doesn't recognize.  If you're happy with .png's then that's fine of course, but it would be cool to know about the .dds issue in case it comes up again.  Academic, in this case.  If you feel up to it and want to .zip them I'd love to test them to further my own understanding of this problem.

Best Regards,

Hello @Anonymous,

I'm going to mark your workaround as a solution and if you find time to attach a .zip of the DDS file I'll look for another solution as well.  Thanks and have a great weekend!

Cheers for the mention, glad your PC isn't going on fire anytime soon and you sorted it out.

You can always batch convert with a script/macro. Dds files to png with Photoshop (I think?).

Could be worth a try if you have it.
Check YouTube for the process.

I have used it for whole folders at a time, no problems.
Not with .Dds files, but you might be lucky. I think it opens them now.

Just updated graphics drive and issue was removed. It feels like window update always restored older drivers.
