multi selection very slow

Hi,

since the last 3dsmax versions, every time I work on a large architectural scene (from fbx import with more then 10.000 objects) and try to select several objects 3dsmax is very very slow.

Selecting one object takes 10 seconds, adding new objects to that selection takes a increasing time to the point it's not possible to work at all.

Please give me some ideas to solve that problem.

I work on a powerfull wind 8.1 workstation with a NVIDIA Quadro K4000 and a Intel(R) Core i7-3820 CPU 3.60Ghz.

Thanks

3ds max does not like the large number of objects. Attach some meshes.

Hi Mikinik,

Thanks for your answer.

In some cases attaching meshes to reduce the number of objects is not an option.

Keeping the object hierarchy is (unfortunatly) a client specification ...

Does anybody has an other solution to this problem ?

Thanks

Sure, no problem.

Rip your Quadro card out of your workstation and replace it with a decent GForce GTX780.

Problem solved.

Hi,

I am very surprised ...

First that it could be a GPU issue,

and also that a 300€ GPU would solve better the problem than a 900€ professionnal one.

But maybe can you explain your point ?

I suspect it`s related to your GPU.

Seems that some users have performance problems with Quadros in combination with 3dsmax.

Just google around.

However what i can tell you that it`s not a problem of 3dsmax, they have done a lot of work lately to

improve viewport performance.

I just did a test with scene containing 20k objects+70Mill polys and there is not noticeable lag when selecting objects.

And i am running a simple GForce GTX680.

In my opinion for viewport interaction Quadros are a waste of money. It might be different for GPU rendering tough.

It is not so. If only it were that simple ...

Hi, I have found where the problem seems to come from.

My big architectural scenes have a complex hierarchy. Objects are sons of dummys wich are sons of dummys etc ...

(This detailed hierarchy comes from an other software fbx export)

I've tried deleting all the dummys, so all the hierarchy, keeping just the mesh objects.

And guess what ? I can now select more than 1000 objects in few seconds !

So, this is obviously not a Quadro problem but a 3dsmax problem. 3dsmax seems to have a hard time dealing with multi selection within complex hierarchy...

But huge scenes do have a lot of objects and a large hierarchy, that's the way it is ... 3dsmax should be able to deal with that !

Thanks guys for you inputs.

OK, i`m sorry then.
I don`t deal with very complex scene hierarchys.
I guess that`s why i`m not seeing this.

If you think you have found a performance issue you should file a bug.

Hi Alain,

If you are able to share a sample file with us we will analyze and check where the issue is coming from, or at least find a workaround at your issue.

Mainly using Xref could help having issues with extremely complex file in 3ds Max.

Another cause could be the re-timers overload that makes the file heavier and slower.

Another possible help will be to merge all the scene to a new 3ds Max 2015 file.

Tell us if that could help you one.

Best regards,

What i can do is privatly share with you a incomplete sample file (confidentiality issue).

How can i send you the file privatly ?

Thanks
