Missing Files for Default Autodesk Materials in 3dsmax 2018

I have gotten 3DS MAX to finally operate.  I have gotten over the shock that Mental Ray is not there.  Now I am trying to create an object.  I wanted to apply Ceramic default Autodesk material, I opened the material editor selected Autodesk Default ceramic material and it is missing the Images. There is no Map Image.  I get the Map image Block connected to the material editor but no map is found its just a black square.  I cant figure out where to go to relink it either.

Is there a solution?  What am I missing?  Do I really have to build all these materials from scratch?

  • Run 3ds Max on a machine running an authorized copy of 3ds Max.
  • Choose Customize Configure User Paths to open the Configure User Paths dialog, and then click the External Files tab,

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

Mental Ray is still available, you just get it from NVIDIA's website.

This is totally normal.  Not all the materials have textures associated with the bitmaps, but they all have nodes ready to accept them with other properties on those nodes as well.  (Position, Scale, Repeat, etc.)   The default materials have these nodes even though there is nothing plugged into them.  This is the same behavior in 2017, 2016, etc.  Try creating a brick material... maps are there?

Hello @Anonymous,

When you get back, please post a screenshot or a file with the issue so I can get a better sense of what is happening.  Thanks!

If i have not configured my VGA card correctly in max sometimes i get black material spheres and when i have got them configured setup correctly they go back to gray. also maybe it could be a mismatch between the material and the renderer.

i don't know if this is the same for the new material nodes in max

It's a decent theory, might be part of this issue here.  Good call.

@Alfred.DeFlaminis Can that cause an issue nowadays with the new material editor? i don't know because as you know I  don't use the new verison max, it's just an old school suggestion, i find it pointless if throwing out old school  suggestion if it doesn't apply to the newer versions of max.

If by cause an issue you mean incompatible with certain renderers then yes.

We are having the same problem. A student is trying to use the pre-made oak, weeping willow and the spruce trees. Only the oak is rendering with materials the others show blank black bit maps and don't show leaves when rendered.

Hello @Collinsl,

Chances are it's not seeing the textures.  What does the Asset Tracker show?  Lots of missing bitmaps?  If so, I may move your message and my reply to a new thread as I don't think there is a default Oak material.  (Could be wrong, but I don't remember it.)

Would it be possible to share this file with me? If privacy is necessary due to NDA reasons, I can create a private folder for you. I am happy to do so if you would like.
