Sometimes, an ENU reset fixes little annoyances like this. It's worth a try. Go find yours and rename it to save it. Then, launch Max and let it build a new one. If the problem is gone, then you know that this is a fix. But you'll have to rebuild some of your customizations.
If it is still happening and a fresh 'ENU' did not fix things, then close Max, delete the new 'ENU' folder that was made and rename your original one back to 'ENU.' Then write back and say what version of Max, what render engine and what video card. This is something you should mention on any post anyway. Then we can start trying some other things to try to fix it.
