Max is crashing if 2nd Symmetry modifier is applied to the one object

Hi. I have 3ds Max 2021 trial version installed on my PC. 3ds Max is crashing if 2nd Symmetry modifier is applied to the one object. Also Max is crashing if I try to open any scene which contains object(s) with 2 Symmetry modifiers applied to the one object. I can't open files made in previous version of Max and this is huge problem for me. Is it known bug? Can this problem be solved somehow without searching and converting to poly problematic objects with older version of Max? Is this problem represented in trial version only?

Would it be possible to share an archive (File > Archive)? I've been trying to reproduce the crash but so far it isn't happening for me. To confirm it happens if you add 2 Symmetry modifiers on an object like in the screenshot below?

Hi

Thank you for your reply.

On attached 2nd_symmetry_workflow.jpg you can see the example of workflow to create the "problematic" objects. It's done in Max 2014.

Also you can find here attached (in 2 messages because of 3 file limit) zipped files 2nd_symmetry_example.max and 2nd_symmetry_problem_obj.max, both made in Max 2014. Max 2021 is able to open 2nd_symmetry_example.max, but if I turn off one of Symmetry modifiers  and then turn it on I get Max crash and offer to safe a copy of the scene, after that Error Report window appears. Minidump created when it happened attached here (3dsmax_minidump-open_on_off_symmetry_mod.dmp). If I try to open 2nd_symmetry_problem_obj.max, Max is crashing before the scene is completely loaded with information window that scene haven't been changed and  Error Report window after that - minidump attached here (3dsmax_minidump_cant_open.dmp)

If I try to create the object in Max 2021 using the same workflow, Max is crashing in the moment when I apply 2nd Symmetry modifier without any error messages and Error Report window, besides that it doesn't create minidump file.

Additionally want to mention that Max 2021 is able to merge the box from 2nd_symmetry_example.max, after that it behaves the same way as it was when 2nd_symmetry_example.max was opened.

If I try to merge the object from 2nd_symmetry_problem_obj.max Max is crashing the same way as it was when I tried to open 2nd_symmetry_problem_obj.max.

I'm having this issue too.  I'm working on a scene that was originally created in max 2016, but has been saved as a 2021 version.  I get this same issue on a simple box.

Hi @MaxBlum and @adele,

Thanks for your messages on this and your example files. I'm forwarding these to our developers and will let you know what I find.

I do have a customer support case with a handful of scene objects having multiple Symmetry modifiers attached, and this scene will crash Max. We're investigating this, and I think these issues are related.

As soon as I get an update I'll let you know. In the meantime, are you able to merge your objects into a clean 3ds Max scene, collapse them into Editable Polys, re-save the scenes (under a new filename) and then reload that scene successfully?

Please let me know, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Hi @jon.bell

Thank you for your attention to this case.

I have Max 2014 installed on my computer, and some files which I'm going to use in nearest future I've made there, so I have possibility to open those scenes which I can't open with Max 2021, find the problematic objects, convert them into Editable Polys and after that open them in Max 2021 with no problem. But not always I'll be working with scenes made in Max 2014, and that will be the big problem for me because I will be not able to do anything with files made for example in Max 2018 - I don't have that version of Max here, and I can't merge objects with multiple Symmetry modifiers. Actually the box from my example scene is the only object I was able to merge into Max 2021, others make Max to crash during the merging process. The only way in this case is to merge objects from those scenes by groups trying to avoid merging objects with multiple Symmetry modifiers applied. Of course, now I know what kind of objects cause this problem, so it's easier to find them. But it took pretty much time to find them first time using "object groups merging->crash/not crash" method.

I hope this problem will be fixed soon. 1st of January 2021 my license is going to be activated and since that moment I have to start to work intensively in Max 2021.

just loaded the file from 2nd_symmetry_problem_obj.zip in Max 2020 and Max 2021 and couldnt get it to  crash. Even not by toggling the symmetrie modifiers on and of at random

Update: i also repeated the steps described above to reproduce the problem in my 2021 installation and everything worked fine. Max didnt crash with the second symmetry modfier applied

Dont know if this is related to the latest update, but my  Max 2021 is at version 2020.3 - the 3rd update already

I dont think those updates are available when you only have the trial, so i guess you are basically on the first 2021 version ? So maybe thats the culprit ?

In the case  the available trial is still only Max 2021.0 ....

well then i have to say, hiding those updates behind a paywall is an exceptionally bad idea as it hurts the impression potential customers get from the stability of the product ...

Actually I though about this and mentioned possibility of such a situation in my first post here - "Is this problem represented in trial version only?". But nobody confirmed it yet.
