Max 2024 material editor shortcuts stop working

The shortcuts inside the material editor stops working on a regular basis. I need to close the material editor and open it again for it to work. Is this a common bug?

@joachimbarrumX79N5 Thanks for flagging your issues here. Unfortunately, there were a few problems that went out with the new SME in 2024 that were either caught too late or we thought we/our users could live with in order to get the new functionality out. The keyboard shortcuts are particularly affected by the other QT elements in Max, so they tend to fight over priority with other UI components, especially other 3rd party plugins. We'll have things cleaned up soon (and the missing hot material brackets are noted too)!

Were these problems posted someplace? I kind of feel like there is a huge disconnect with communication on this part.

When we have known issues that seriously affect our users, we try to post workarounds as much as possible if they exist. When we see issues posted in these forums, we try to respond and, of course, address them in the software as soon as possible in an Update or in the next release. But to be brutally honest, 3ds Max is an extremely complex piece of software, and there's no way to fix everything that is found internally or reported by beta users before releasing. We have to make difficult judgement calls on priority and there are usually more leftovers than any of us would like, but feel that the existing functionality has high enough value for you to release with those issues. If we simply published a list of all of those leftovers, it would probably be business suicide. Even just monitoring and responding to these posts can take away a lot of precious time from our development work, but we do what we can to acknowledge the mistakes.

I really like the previous post. It addresses a few things that I've always strived to convey and corral here on the forums. Those being expectations and negativity. When I first started using the forum before this new one (the new one not new anymore) I was learning Max and leveraging it as the foundation for a business. I always told people that the Max forum was one of the best on the planet, and I still feel that way. It's not besieged by the inane and sophomoric banter and negativity that plagues and ruins a lot of forums. But we still have it and I don't blame the posters for that necessarily as long as it's not obsessive because I too had angst and dissatisfaction with Max and how I expected it to perform.

I became a more seasoned computer user and a better Max user, I began to realize how incredibly difficult it is to even put out a program like Max, Maya, Cinema4D, etc. It's never released "bug free" or it would never be released at all. There are few if any complex programs in the world that are " bug free." It's just not economically doable if you need to make sales to keep the lights on.

What new users fail to realize, and I think ultimately do is that Max (or other 3D programs) provide us with a tool from which we can make a living. They glitch, frustrate and annoy us from time to time, but as you become more seasoned, many users focus on the positives and what they CAN do with the software instead of what they can't, or what's buggy, or what some other software can do. We learn work arounds or get some other software to do a task. New users and new computer users in general take for granted what it takes to produce something like Max. No matter how appropriate it may seem to slam a development team for not fixing "your particular bug" in Max as slackness or incompetence, it's just poor logic. I think users ultimately give up the day-to-day battles and focus on the more global picture and use Max, as best they can to make a living. Just like in real life, it's called "maturity" and it happens with computer users.

So, to you Max developers, keep fighting the good fight. I know that you are some pretty talented people and passionate about your product. But I do appreciate when you poke your head in and respond to us like you did above. Even as that takes valuable time away from your mission, it goes a long way to help the psychology of users who sometimes think we are out here all alone and no one is listening. Thank you.

Now, stop reading my “too long” post and go fix our all of our popup windows so we can expand them and not have to scroll forever and ever like in the ‘Summary Info’ that doesn’t sort either….lol….  😊

thank you for taking the time to chime in and let us know that you check the forums and do acknowledge these bugs. Also very happy to see that the 2024.1 release came out so suddenly. It fixed the white bracket bug! 🙂 Happy to see that. The "show textures" on materials button in the menu stilldoesn't do anything...Hopefully it will be adressed in .2 release. At least that bug is easier to work around. Shortcuts seem to work, but it takes longer to experience this bug so can't really reproduce it on the fly.

I will start using the report a problem in the help menu from now on, it's good to know that reaches someone.

thanks again

3dmax2024. 1, use the maxscript (actionMan. 369891408 "55581") executeAction failure, this did not occur in previous versions

Ok I just had this happen to me. Keyboard shortcut override toggle didn't fix it. Closing the slate editor and reopening did. So this does seem to be a bug.

Happened in Max 2021, specifically  hotkey A - dont believe it was/is just my copy of Max...

Wasn't very surprised with little or no reports on that because didnt see any complaints about "broken" old Max maps

I believe they are still broken.

I've discovered that in Slate the 'Del' key does nothing. You can't select and delete anything with a key. You have to click the trachcan icon in the menu.

It's pretty essential part of the UI.

Also things still stop working in the the slate material editor, particularly the writing backets of material, where you rename materials etc. and you need to restart the material editor.

And, you cannot assign ANY own shortcuts to anything in the material editor now. Well, you can, but they will not work.

This has been happening in every SME version since it was first introduced. I use 2022 here in work, and yesterday the hotkeys were periodically ceasing to function several dozen times yesterday. Sometimes it's not every key, but most notibly the 'H' key to hide unused node slots. It's mad frustrating, and I do not know how to fix it other than trying to open and close the SME or 3DSMax itself, or hammering on the hotkey until Max decides to submit to my requests.

It is not solely a 2024 problem.
