Lost the viewport display settings toolbars?

Anonymous
Not applicable

For whatever reason, I seem to have lost the viewport display settings toolbars that normally sit in the top left of the viewport. I've combed through the settings a dozen times over to find something to toggle them on/off, but I can't seem to find anything. I've tried reinstalling Max, deleting the 3dsMax appData folders, deleting the 3dsMax folder in /Documents, and nothing seems to have brought them back.

Any ideas how to bring these settings overlays back? For reference, I'm talking about the "[+] [Top] [Wireframe]" buttons seen here. I'm using 3ds Max 2013 x64.

2 things i can suggest.

1 - Use Revert to Startup Layout found on Under Customize Menu

2 - And or delete your 3ds max.ini files located under C:\Users\ xxxxxxx\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2014 - 64bit\ENU

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

I'd like to help you with this issue regarding missing viewport label menus.   @rendermaster has some great suggestions here, and the only thing I might add is that they may not appear if you're using a display driver mode that your card doesn't support.  Can you please let me know which graphics card you have?   It can also happen if your CUI became corrupted but it can be reset as noted here by loading another custom UI scheme.

Also, did the suggestions by @rendermaster work for you?  (I gather you already deleted the ENU folder when you'd mentioned AppData.)

Hi all, sorry for the lack of reply, I was away for the holidays. I actually upgraded my GPU from an AMD 7970 to an NVIDIA GTX 1080, and in the process the menus have reappeared! So in the end, it seems to have been something with my graphics card. To answer your question, yes, I had already deleted the ENU folder when clearing out AppData, and also had previously tried the "Revert to Startup Layout" option.

Thanks so much for your help guys!

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks very much for the update!  I didn't realize a graphics card going bad could have this effect, so I'm very glad you posted this.  This one thread has all 3 solutions for this problem, I'm very excited!  Thanks again for keeping us updated.

Hi Guys, I'm having the exact same issue after finally decommissioning my old laptop for a newer one. I've successfully transferred the licence and 3DS Max 2013 is activated ok, but I'm not seeing the Viewport Controls either. I always use the Max 2009 UI as I like the lighter scheme and I'm used to the layout, but no matter what UI I select, the same problem occurs. The only thing I can see that is different between my old laptop and new laptop is that my old laptop used an Nvidia graphics card and this new one uses an AMD Radeon card, both with similar specs I might add. I've tried changing the display driver in the customise settings which corrects the problem with the controls missing, but it doesn't render very well in the display ports. Any help you can provide or tips you have would be greatly appreciated.
