Local Scaling Issues

Whenever I try to scale an object along the y axis it also scales along the z axis (scales the height as well). I have tried checking the gizmos preferences and I have also tried right clicking the scale option to give specific increments, but I doesn't change anything. Would anyone happen to know why the scaling is not normal?

I just realized that there was a drop down menu when you hold left click on the scaling icon in the toolbar...

There is http://3dsmaxfeedback.autodesk.com/forums/76981-default-settings/suggestions/1490623-q-select-object... to disable the cycle... (Q für select and R for scale)

I would like to know if there are people who like the Q/R cycle?!?

Regardless of whether the Scaling type is the one you want, don't do it at the object level - you're opening up a world of hurt if you do. Scale sub-objects, or apply an XForm Modifier and scale its Gizmo, or use an FFD... anything but scaling the objects, especially if they will be animated.
