Issue with .3ds exporting and box uvw mapping

Hi,

I have in the scene an object with BOX uvw mapping.

I export all to .3ds format and when I import it I get "Improper file format".

I tried changing every option in the UVW modifier, but nothing changes.

I tried with different mapping (planar, sphere...) and everything goes fine.

It occours with NOT every object, but I can't understand why.

It occours with similar objects in more than one file.

It occours with both 3ds max 2020 and 2016.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks you all

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for your question. I just exported a teapot with UVW: Box mapping applied to .3ds format then re-imported it, and it loaded fine.

Is there a reason you need to export to .3ds? Could you export your objects to .obj or .fbx instead, with textures? The .3ds file format is 30 years old and has many restrictions (including a maximum of 65,000-polys per object), so if you're trying to export a Max scene with objects that exceed this size, you have encounter problems.

Please let us know if you have any other issues with this or questions, and we hope to hear from you soon!

Hi @jon.bell, thank you for the answer. I know the restrictions of 3ds ff but I need to import the model in another software (it can import 3ds or skp).
I can't figure out the reason yet, anyway I solved splitting my object in 2 or more parts then applying again the uvw box mapping, even if the original object was not exceeding the 65,000 polys (from 10,000 to 50,000).
Thank you
