Hey guys, first time posting here. My computer is... I5 3570 8 gb ddr3 hd 7950, 900 mhz core, 1250 memory.
When I render it appears that my CPU does all the work and my graphics card isn't used at all. I'm extremely unfamiliar with this software, in the rendering menu I notice theres somthing called Nvidia mental ray and iray is there some kind of amd equivalent? right now I've got it set to Default Scanline Renderer. Also how can I get the very best quality possible? all my settings should be at defaults.
Scanline and Mental Ray do not use the graphics card for rendering. Iray does, but requires an nVidia card, not an AMD/ATI (AFAIK). With your card it will be using the CPU. Quicksilver should work, but read the Max Help carefully as there are Material and Map limitations.
