i was just wondering if there's still i could do to make the isolines look more crisp and not choppy. i'm using mental ray. any v-ray solution is also welcome. thanks in advance

here's my mental ray render at Quality 1 & Maximum Quality. and i think there's just little difference when Quality is maximized

Is there a way to fix those choppy/broken lines?

Hello;

I was looking for a screenshot on the other post we discussed earlier;

This is actually because of the size of your object and the resolution of your render output, if it is not about overlapping faces / edges and / or vertices.

Simply increase your objects size and render resolution. If you still see those artifacts, it means that you have overlapping issues. If you are positive that you have overlapping issues, then please the 3ds Max file for 2014 and share it with me, so we can take a look.

Best regards;

I just checked your scene and noticed that you are using the "wire" flag in the material.

One thing you have to accept with that flag, is that the produced wires are not really perfect: they tend to taper towards vertices/cross sections. Turbosmooth iterations pronounce that effect as they increase the amount of vertices/edge crossections

You can easily verify that by assigning such a material to a teapot and crank up the wire thickness. Whichever renderer you use, you will notice it easily.

There is no real cure for this, other than using an explicit wire texture map/material, some renderers like vray come with explicit materials/maps for this. Ther are other maps out like bytegheists edgemap or blurbetas wiretex. Most of them do not work with mental ray though.

The one that works best IMHO is Itoos ColorEdge map, which is free to download on their website

http://www.itoosoft.com/downloads/free_plugins.php

For the other ones you may search on maxplugins.de for Edgemap and WireTex

But you would have to switch to scanline to use them

See attached comparison

Here's your scene rendered using Itoo's ColorEdge at Full HD ( increased TS iterations to 4)  - did take it's time, probably could be tweaked for faster rendering. Wanted to attach the scene - but can't attach a file here (no max no zip) - Autodesk ... you really loosing the grip ... but cutting 10% of your workforce surely helps with this ...

can you please help me, i can't seem to see the plug-in in 3ds max 2016. i downloaded the itoo coloredge, and unzipped the 2016 64 bit dlt in 3ds max.

the site said apply an edit mesh on the model and clik on the surface properties. but i see no itoo parameters. i tried looking for tutorials but i can't see a coloredge plugin tutorial in youtube. (only forest tutorials). thanks

i saw an old trick in youtube on rendering in wireframe. I'm not sure how my photo looks here but i think this render looks looks better (1:1) than my first renders.
