How to add vertices without manipulating the spline (circle)?

I want to add vertices to loft. I have 4 vertices on my circle and 8 on my new shape. When I click insert in the edit spline modifier list and I click the circle, the circle now has a little dimple. Is there any way to click the circle where this won't happen? 

Also, how can I add a vertice and confirm the command so I don't have to move my mouse?

to add more vetcies then click the refine button once your in vertex mode your refine is under geometry
