How to add faces to an editable spline or poly without dividing faces?

I was wondering what the process was for adding to an editable spline or poly? If for example I created a shape, but then wanted to - for example - add a section to the side of it, how could I do this without splitting existing faces/segments and manipulating them? Would this all be done with shape boolean, and then converting them to editable  again?

 

If for example I drew a circle, and then wanted to have a rectangle protruding out the side of it.
