Exporting objects to .fbx format

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi guys.
I'm attempting to export some objects out of a scene using the .fbx format but for some objects it doesn't work. When I hit "save" a box appears which says "Export: Don't know how to save to that file type". I have no idea why it is doing this.
Please help. Cheers

Hi. Would be a lot easier to help you, if you told us which filetype the exporter doesn't know. Could be something simple, like if you copy/pasted the name of the Max-file into the fbx exporter. Then this error would occur, because ".max" should have been ".fbx".

If this isn't the case, then please help us helping you, by providing some more information.

Hi PROH.
It doesn't know .fbx. When I attempt to export it to this format it just says it doesn't know how to save to that file type.

Hi. Your problem is that you're using a dot (.) in the name. That means that the filetype is ".v cabinet", and this filetype is unknown. Remove the dot, and it should work.

I know that some programs accept a dot in the name, but based on experience I would recommend never to do it. You'll never know what kind of problems it'll cause.

Hope it helps

To add another thing to PROH's advice... Don't use spaces either.  Underscores (_) or dashes (-) work just as well, and don't confuse some programs like a space can.

IMHO, just add a .fbx to the filename, then it should work with dots...

btw. enable to see file extensions in explorer makes always sense!

But should max not be more intelligence?!? I mean the filetype is set to fbx: So max should choose it, if the extension in the given filename is unknown.

I think the problem is due to the period and the space.  "T.V Cabinet" is being read as the filename T.V and it's likely ignoring the "cabinet" because of this.  I did a couple tests, and Max will SAVE a file with that name.  It just can't EXPORT to it.  It might not be a 3ds Max issue, but more of an exporter issue.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll have to give it a try once I can.
I'm currently creating a 7 sec walkthrough of an environment and it's currently going to take a day+ to render, opting 3ds max un usable until it's done but I'ff def try these techniques.
Thanks again guys.

Hi @Anonymous,

Just wanted to revive this thread to see if these issues were resolved for you. To recap, when exporting files:

  1. Try using underscores (_) or dashes/hyphens (-) instead of spaces or periods. (Avoid periods altogether.)
  2. In Windows Explorer > View, turn on View File Extensions so you can see the exact file types you're working with.

Please let us know if this helps, or accept as a Solution if this issue is resolved for you!

I absolutely hate myself for spending so long trying to fix this problem when I could have just looked it up and realized the period in my file name was the culprit.
