Custom Sample Object not available

Anonymous
Not applicable

Dear Autodesk,

I've noticed that in 3ds Max 2017,  in the Material editor window, the preview option "Custom Sample Object" is no longer available.

I can select the .max file from the Options pop-up window, but I can't select it to be shown on the material sample slot.

Has this function been removed?

Regards,

Gabor

have you consider this..."The scene should contain a single unlinked object that fits in an imaginary cube 100 units on a side. The object must be either a primitive with a Generate Mapping Coords. checkbox, or have a UVW Map modifier applied to it. The scene can contain a camera and lights."

Hello rendermaster,

Thank you for your answer.

of course I have checked the requirements of a sample scene. I saved a scene which contains a twisted Box smaller than 100x100x100 units each side, it also has mapping coordinates.

My problem is that the option "Custom Sapmle Object" is not even available next to the default objects (Sphere, Cylinder or Box), although I have selected the .max file in the Options window

See attached images.

Hello @Anonymous,

I do have a logged defect about this in the tracker and it is a known issue with Max 2017.  It wasn't removed intentionally.  I will update it with a link to this thread.

Hello @Anonymous,

I'm going to mark my previous post as a solution, but solution is a bit of a misnomer.  It's an 'answer' more than a solution.  The reason I do this is so other people may have a better chance to find this thread if they have the same issue and they don't waste time looking for solutions when it's a bug and needs to be fixed.

Have this same issue in 3ds max 2018.3. I can't select the custom object to display in material editor. I can select the max file in options but that's it.

It's only been about a year or two.... I think it will be fixed quickly, so let's give it a few more years, shall we?

Seriously, without meaning any offense, I have no idea, what the hell the software developers are working on. But I hope it's something important, because these kind of bugs get never fixed, and the software is showing more and more new bugs every year.

Confirm the issue here, @max2018.4. Shouldn't be too hard too fix 1 button I would think.

Scripting the setting works for us:

setMTLMeditObjType meditmaterials[1] 4

(where 1 is a number between 1-24 for each slot in the compact material editor)

You could make a little graphical interface around it too make it more friendly to work with.

I'm using 2019.2 version. Is there really no way to load a more complex scene in the sample slots?

I tried, but no "custom Sample object" button is  available.

It would be very useful to load a "simball" like other 3d applications. (like the Arnold sample .......)

Haha... After about 15 years still the same sarcasm about autodesk products. Happens if you are desperate and resigned cause you know the company will make an existing problem even worse before it gets resolved in a decade. If its get resolved at all. Still I'm surprised they aren't bankrupt with such attitude.... Useless to ask if its resolved. In the latest SP 2018 for sure its not...

Neither is it resolved in 2019.2 so, as I said, let's not be too impatient and give them a couple more decades, shall we?

There is a script which adds this feature , I tested it in Max 2019 and it worked fine... Here is the link :

If you sit and wait for autodesk to fix the bugs, you'll get nothing done ! Just look around user-based communities and scripts sites. You'll most likely find what you want.

Autocad 2020 and 2021 and still no button to use a designated custom sample object.

The article in Knowledge Networks still boast the function though.

Previously suggested script seems to be defunct and was removed. But comments references the source and asks for suggestions to fix it.

I tested both the custom background and sample objects with all available renders in 2020.

Only in Scanline was I able to change to custom backround map.

The choice to select Custom Sample Object has not been available in any combination I have tested.

The option is not at all available to even set in Slate.
