Correct way to render layers for compositing

Hi,

I am not talking about rendering AOV passes or light groups to build the beauty pass in post production. I am seeking the method that is used to seperate elements in a scene into layers and be able to control their visibility, using hide outs and so on.

I see in many other software they have this method named layers, from what i can see 3ds has somthing similar in the form of state sets? is this correct or am i barking up the wrong tree

Maya - has a layers dialog in the render setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLDvcVzU1h8

Blender - simply has a layer system with toggles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtdczoXVyvQ

Thanks
