conflicting hotkeys using Alt

I've been customizing hotkeys for all the tools that I regularly use, and some of the hotkeys I set are "Alt + key". 
For example, Alt+F for global search.
However, whenever I use Alt + key, Max opens up one of the menus at the top instead. Alt + F ignores my custom hotkey, but instead opens the "File" menu at the top left. Alt + C opens the Crease menu, and so on.

Is there any way I can get rid of this behavior?

some hotkeys weren't properly saved.
