Chamfer Modifier Error

Loading a consultant's file creates the following error: This scene contains a Chamfer modifier from a later version of 3ds Max, which may require features not supported in this version. Loaded Chamfer version: 410; current Chamfer version: 405.

We're both running Max 2021.2 and he hasn't to his knowledge loaded a new chamfer modifier.

This has now happened with files from another consultant and it crashes Max every time. Also, if I merge the file and save, it crashes Max on open. I can't work with their files unless they go in and remove the modifier from all the geometry. This is a very serious problem for me and I hope someone can help solve this. Very frustrating.

Just update your 3dsMax version to whatever latest hotfix that is available.

Hi @lofgreencaLQCUU ,

Thanks for your message. As others have stated, please download and install the latest update for your copy of 3ds Max from your Autodesk Account and this error message should go away. Thanks!

Hi, i was having the same frustrating issue about updated chamfers.

My solution was to merge the crashing file into a fresh max file. Then, select all the geometry and convert everything to editable poly all at once, then save this file. this did the trick for me.

Updating to the latest version of your software will NOT just magically make this error go away.  I already have the most up to date version of 3DS Max 2021.3.2 installed and saving a file from 2022.3 down to said version of 2021 still doesn't work.

As others have commented on their solution, I'm just trying to avoid that.

Oh, and why am I doing this anyway?  Because 3DS Max 2022.3 DELETE key doesn't work (and I'm trying to avoid resetting my ENU folder and lose all my settings......).

What a crock of.........

@JezEmin ,

If you have a Chamfer modifier applied in the latest version of 3ds Max and you're "saving that scene down" to an earlier Max version, then you need to either:

  1. Turn off the Chamfer modifier on the current object(s) before export, apply a new Chamfer modifier in the older copy of Max and duplicate the "newer" modifier's settings
  2. Collapse the Chamfer's object(s) modifier stacks before saving down to an earlier Max format.

Since the Chamfer modifier was improved in later versions/updates for Max, objects containing the new modifier need to be tweaked either before or after export to address any incompatibilities with the earlier versions. Thanks,

Jon, Thank you for replying to this thread. As I mentioned above, opening or merging my consultant's model crashes Max. I am using the latest version of 2022 and still the problem persists. The only solution I've found thus far is to have my consultants search through the thousands of objects and find the culprit, delete the modifier and re-send. This is NOT a workable solution. It's been over a year since I reported this problem. I forked over good money for the upgrade and am quite upset that this hasn't been fixed.

I just received files from a consultant who is using the same version of Max that I am and still I get the error that the loaded version is 505 but the current Chamfer version is 410 even though it has been a year and a half since I reported this problem. WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO FIX THIS!!!??? What am I supposed to do, tell all my consultants to stop using certain basic features of Max because of crap code that nobody seems willing or able to fix. Two and a half years folks, that's all I got - two and a half years before I retire and believe me I'm going to celebrate not having to deal with you guys OR YOUR CRUMMY SOFTWARE EVER AGAIN! Hey, do you think I'm pissed?!

It has now been 2 1/2 years since I reported this and it still hasn't been fixed. Not that anyone at Autodesk cares, just thought I'd mention it yet again.
