De-select everything, Zoom Extents All. An open group will have a pink bounding box. Alternatively, select a single object which is in the open group and run the following short script.
(
while selection[1].parent != undefined do
   select selection[1].parent
)

Max 2016 (SP1/EXT1)
Win7Pro x64 (SP1). i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX11.
nVidia GTX760 (2GB) (Driver 430.86).

Well it's been a long time but maybe it can help someone :

for obj in $ do
(
	if isGroupHead obj AND isOpenGroupMember obj then
	(
		print(obj.name + " - isOpenGroupMember  : " + isOpenGroupMember obj as string +
				" - isGroupHead : " + isGroupHead obj as string)
		setGroupMember obj false
		--setGroupOpen obj false
	)
)

When this error shows up the group head is flagged as a group member as well as a group head, so we just have to detach it.

Don't forget to make backup before saving the file....

I was having the same problem, I was able to select an object from the group and create a new group, then I ungrouped it and did that with the rest of the items until they all had no group anymore.
